040 of 2020 - Support of creating the Fairpark Public Market in partnership with the State of Utah and Salt Lake CJOINT RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF CREATING THE FAIRPARK PUBLIC
MARKET IN PARTNERSHP WITH THE STATE OF UTAH AND SALT LAKE
COUNTY
WHEREAS, many areas on the west side of Salt Lake City exist as a ‘food desert’ that
would benefit from increased access to food and entrepreneurial
opportunities; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City is committed to increasing equity throughout the city
including access to food; and
WHEREAS, the Redevelopment Agency (RDA) of Salt Lake City created the North
Temple Project Area, which includes the Utah State Fairpark. Served by the
TRAX airport light rail line, the North Temple Corridor is a major entryway
to Salt Lake City connecting Downtown to the Salt Lake City International
Airport, making the area an opportune site for new transit-oriented
development; and
WHEREAS, the RDA of Salt Lake City is working towards attracting catalytic and infill
development to the area; and
WHEREAS, in 2018, the RDA of Salt Lake City funded the Utah State Fairpark Public
Market Feasibility Study which returned a positive recommendation in
August of 2019 as a location for placemaking; and
WHEREAS, creation of the Fairpark Public Market would increase access to food,
provide local entrepreneurial opportunity, better use an underutilized
facility with ongoing activity, encourage development, help activate the
Jordan River Trail and provide a much-needed amenity to the area; and
WHEREAS, because the Fairpark showcases agriculture and food products from around
the State of Utah; having a public market will provide an opportunity for an
educational component on food production; and
WHEREAS, the project has the support of westside residents, Technical Advisory
Committee members (made up of key community leaders, neighborhood
representatives, and food specialists), elected officials, the Fairpark Board
and Staff, and the general public.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
that the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor of Salt Lake City acknowledge the
need to recognize the Fairpark Public Market as a priority.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED
that the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor of Salt Lake City express their
support to work with the State of Utah and Salt Lake County to develop a
partnership to create the Fairpark Public Market.
