017 of 2020 - Celebrating Pride Month.
JOINT RESOLUTION CELEBRATING PRIDE MONTH IN SALT LAKE CITY
WHEREAS, the month of June is traditionally recognized as Pride Month in commemoration
of the Stonewall riots of 1969, which are widely considered to the most important events
leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, and queer plus (LGBTQ+) rights in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City has a proud history of leading the state, and many othe r cities
across the nation, in enacting policies and programs that stand against discrimination and
promote equality, opportunity, and prosperity for all members of the LGBTQ+ community;
and
WHEREAS, Utah’s first pride parade occurred in Salt Lake City and featured 270 people who
marched from the steps of the Utah State Capitol down Main Street; the parade has grown to
become one of the largest in the state and remains a free and open event to the public; and
WHEREAS, the Utah Pride Festival began in Salt Lake City with a small, informal gathering
of Utah's diverse LGBTQ+ community in 1974, and is now an annual cultural event drawing
more than 60,000 people; and
WHEREAS, Pride Month will be an uplifting reminder of how much we have to celebrate and
should prompt us to remain diligent and committed in our efforts to ensure full equality,
inclusion, and empowerment for every member of our LGBTQ+ community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor of Salt
Lake City recognize Pride Month in Salt Lake City.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, Salt Lake City encourages and welcomes all residents and
visitors to embrace Pride Month’s message of equality and unity, and to enjoy its celebrations
this fall in peace, safety, and love.
