AN ORDINANCE AMENDING Chapter 2 of Title 1 of the Revised
Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, as amended, by amending
Section 1-2-17, relating to biting animals quarantined for obser-
vation, and by adding thereto a new section 1-2-23, relating to
penalty.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake
City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Chapter 2 of Title 1 of the Revised Or-
;dinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, as amended, be, and the
same hereby is, amended by amending Section 1-2-17, relating to
biting animals quarantined for observation to read as follows:
"Sec. 1-2-17. Biting animals quarantined for
observation. Any animal of a species subject to
rabies which is known to have bitten or injure any
person so as to cause an abrasion of the skin shall
be placed in confinement under observation of a
veterinary hospital, or a municipal pound, and shall
not be killed or released until at least ten (10)
days from the date of the bite or abrasion. If the
animal dies or has been killed within said period,
its head shall be removed and immediately taken to
the state health laboratory to be examined for rabies.
It shall be the duty of any person having the care or
custody of any animal subject to the provisions of this
section, whether owner or otherwise, to immediately de-
liver such animal to a veterinary hospital or a mun-
icipal pound, or if said animal has been killed or dies
prior to such delivery, then, in such event, to immediately
deliver the head of such animal to the state health
laboratory. It shall be unlawful for any person to
fail to deliver such animal or head thereof as herein
required."
SECTION 2. That Chapter 2 of Title 1 of the Revised Ordinances
of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, as amended, be, and the same hereby
is, amended by adding thereto a new Section 1-2-23, relating to
penalty, said section to read as follows:
"Sec. 1-2-23. Penalty. It shall be unlawful for
any person to do any act prohibited by this title or
to fail or refuse to do any act required by this title,
and any person guilty of violating any of the provisions

of this title shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor
and punishable by a fine not to exceed Two Hundred
Ninety Nine Dollars ($299.00) or imprisonment not to
exceed six (6) months or by both fine and imprisonment;
provided, however, where a lesser penalty is provided
for any specific section or chapter of this title,
whether provided for by any specific chapter, section
or by state statute, such lesser penalty shall apply."
SECTION 3. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners, it
is necessary to the peace, health and welfare of the inhabitants of
Salt Lake City that this ordinance become effective immediately.
SECTION 4. This ordinance shall take effect by its first
publication.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 3rd day of January, 1974.
