AN ORDINANCE AMENDING Sections 18-9-38 and 18-9-41 of the Revised
Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to Dairy and Milk
Inspection - Grade A Raw Milk.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
Utah:
SECTION 1. That Sections 18-9-38 and 18-9-41 of the Revised
Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to Dairy and Milk
Inspection - Grade A Raw Milk, be, and the same hereby are, amended to
read as follows:
Sec. 18-9-38. Walls and ceilings. Walls and ceilings shall
be of concrete or masonry to a height of not less than three
feet six inches above the floor. Main ceiling height shall be
nine feet from the floor for all new construction. Where addi-
tional ceiling height is needed it may be provided by following
the roof contour to a point which will furnish footage equal
to a nine foot ceiling. The upper walls and ceilings may be
constructed of masonry, plastered smooth finished, transite
cement board, fiber glass and other impervious finished material;
sheathing is prohibited on remodel or new construction for final
surface material. There shall be provided a port opening of not
less than five inches in diameter set through the milk house
wall installed convenient for bulk pickup. It shall be set no
lower than four inches above the floor.

Sec. 18-9-41. One room and two room milk houses - special
provisions: (a) In a single room milk house an entrance between
the milk room and the mildng parlor must be separated by an alley-
way of not less than six feet and not more than fifteen feet.
The milking parlor wall may be open, provided the barn wall is
six feet high at the alleyway entrance. All doors and openings
to a single milk house shall open outward, be self-closing and
tight fitting and comply with Section 18-9-40, relating to
equipment placement.
(b) In units where a two room milk house is provided it shall
be separated from the barn by a six foot and not to exceed
fifteen feet alleyway; excepting, in that instance where a pipe-
line milking device and a bulk milk holding and/or cooling tank
are to be used and the milk house are under a common roof, then
the barn wall adjoining the alleyway between the milk house and
the milking barn may be eliminated, provided that a minimum dis-
tance of six feet is maintained between the milk house wall and
the nearest milking stall or standing platform or litter gutter,
whichever applies, and further provided that cows are excluded

from the milking barn except during milking, and any feeding
while milking is limited to concentrates. Any milk house
doorway opening into the alleyway or barn shall be equipped
with a solid self-closing door, opening outward from the milk
house. Milk house doors in the outside walls may open inward
if provided with self-closing screen doors during the fly
season. This alleyway shall be opened at both ends, but can
be e;uipped with sliding or overhead doors, one end may be
fitted with openable windows occupying not less than three-
fourths the alleyway width. The alleyway is intended to be
kept open, doors and windows are provided only as protection
during storm and severe weather. Compressors and milking
machine units shall not or cannot be installed in the alleyway.
Milk room alleyway and milk barn can be constructed under one
roof.
In two-room milk houses, one room shall be used for cooling,
handling and storing of milk and cleaned utensils. The other
room shall be a washroom for washing, rinsing, and utensil
sterilizing. Hot water heaters not creating smoke, soot or
dust can be installed in the washroom, otherwise, a boiler room
shall be provided. Gas and oil heaters must be vented to the
outside.
SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, it is necessary to the peace, health and welfare of the
inhabitants of Salt Lake City that this ordinance become effective
immediately.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first
publication.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 28th day of October , 1971.
