Result AN ORDINANCE
An ordinance amending Section 503 of the Revised Ordinances
of Salt Lake City of 1913.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake
City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Section 503 of the Revised Ordinances of
Salt Lake City of 1913, be, and the same is hereby amended so as to
read as follows:
SECTION 503. All awnings, except canvas awnings, all
shades and balconies projecting more than two feet beyond the
property like, hereafter erected in Salt Lake City, must be
securely supported on wrought iron brackets built into the
walls, or on iron pillars, and no part thereof shall be less
than ten feet above the line of the curb level of the side-
walk, and a gutter shall thereon be formed to carry off the
water to the line of the building and thence to the street
gutter. Awnings, shades and balconies shall not extend be-
yond the line of the curb, and no permanent awnings, shades
or balconies shall be constructed on or appurtenant to any
building without a permit from the Board of Commissioners;
and the same shall be constructed of metal only, or of metal
and wire Class, to the approval and satisfaction of the
Chief of the Bureau of Mechanical Inspection. No awning,
shade or balcony shall be erected on any building facing on
any street, lane, alley or place which is twenty feet or lee

in width. The height of all movable or canvas or cloth
awnings or shades shall be not less at the lowest part there-
of than seven and one-half feet above the curb level of the side-
walk, and all such canvas, or cloth awnings shall be kept raised
except when the sun shines on the place to be protected by the
same. All such canvas or cloth awnings shall be constructed
and maintained with the approval and to the satisfaction of
the Chief of the Bureau of Mechanical Inspection. The owner
of or the person maintaining and controlling all permanent
awnings, shades and balconies shall pay to the city the follow-
ing fees:
For permit to erect,$2.00; annual inspection fee, for
the first twenty-five linear feet,measured parallel with the
building, 12 cents per foot; for the next twenty-five feet, 8
cents per foot; and for all over fifty feet, 5 cents per foot.
All fees shall be due and payable in advance, except
the annual inspection fees, which shall be collected by the
Bureau of Mechanical Inspeotion as soon as the annual inspection
of each structure is completed.
If any awning, shade or balcony be found by the
Bureau of Mechanical Inspection to be unsafe or dangerous, the
sane shall be forthwith repaired and rendered safe by the own-
er thereof, or the person maintaining and controlling the same;
and if such awning, shade or balcony be not forthwith repaired
and made safe, the Bureau of Mechanical Inspection shall at
once abate and remove it, and shall, if necessary, call upon
the Fire Department for assistance in such abatement, and it
shall be the duty of the Fire Department so to assist.
SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take feet upon its first
publication.
