Result J AN ORDINANCE
An ordinance repealing an ordinance passed by the
Board of Commissioners of halt Luke City, February 20th, 1915,
relating to traffic and travel on streets in Salt Lake City,
as amended by an ordinance pastied august 27, 1915, and an
ordinance passed May 10, 1917, and repealing ;Sections 1220,
1221, 1222, 1223 of Chapter LV, Revised Ordinances of Balt
Lake City of 1915; and enacting a new ordinance in lieu
thereof relating to traffic and travel on the streets of
Salt Lake City.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of
Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That an ordinance pas sod by the Board
of Commissioners of Salt Lake City February 20, 1915, re-

repealed.
;$BCTION 2. That Sections 1220, 1221, 1222, and •
1223 of Chapter LV, Revised Ordinances of 3a1t Lake City,
be, and the same are hereby repealed.

SECTION 6. There is hereby enacted a new ordinance re-
lating to traffic and travel on streets of Salt Lake City, as
follows:
SECTION 1. DEFINITIONS. The following terms when-
ever used in this ordinance shall have the meaning indicated.
Any such term used in the singular shall include
the plural, and any such term used in the plural shall include
the singular. Words used in the masculine gender shall com-
prehend and include as well the feminine and neuter:
PERSON. tiny natural person, firm, company, part-
nership or corporation.
STREET. That part of the public highway intended
for vehicles.
CURB. The boundaries of a street as defined herein.
VEHICLE. All conveyances except baby carriages or
street or interurban cars.
MOTOR VEHICLE. All vehicles propelled by any other
than muscular power except such as run upon rails.
DRIVER. The rider, driver or leader of a horse; a
person Who pushes, draws, propels, operates or is in charge of
a vehicle.
CHAUFFEUR. Any person operating a motor vehicle
for hire or as the employee of the owner thereof.
STREET IN'PER3ECTION Any street which joins another
at an angle whether it crosses the street or not.
PARK. A waiting vehicle, except vehicles stopped
to load or unload.
SECTION 2. CONGESTED DISTRICT. There is hereby
designated a congested district, which shall be all streets
and parts of streets within the following boundaries, to-wit:

The north side of South Temple Street, the east side
of State Street, the north side of Fifth South Street, and
the east side of West Temple Street.
SECTION '. VIOL TION. It shall be unlawful for any
person to violate any of the provisions of his ordinance,
or to fail to observe and obey any of the, requirements and
restrictions thereof.
SECTION 4. WLREING 3IGiT ,y3. Every motor vehicle shall
be equipped with a signaling apparatus consisting of a horn,
bell or suitable device.
SECTION 5. AEIISTLES. NOISES. Siren whistles or
whistles operated by condensed air, exhaust gas or steam,
shall not be used on any vehicle except those operated by
the Police Department, Fire Department, or sheriff and
authorized public utility vehicles when on emergency calls,
nor shall any person operating or in charge of any motor
vehicle create any unnecessary noise.
SECTION 6. SMOKE. No motor vehicle shall be operated
in such a way as to emit unnecessary smoke or offensive
vapors,
SECTION 7• STEEDING WITH MOTOR RUNNING. No motor
vehicle shall be permitted to stand along upon any street
with any part of its machinery running.
SECTION 8. ,E2EJEi S. No person shall ride, drive or
propel, or cause or permit to be ridden, driven or pro-
pelled, any motor vehicle upon or along any gre*tim street
of this.city, unless the same shall be equipped with a good
and sufficient brake or set of brakes which shall be of
sufficient power when applied to bring such vehicle, when

running at a speed of twelve miles per hour, to a full stop with-
in ten feet from the point where such brake is applied.
SECTION 9. LIGHTS. Every motor vehicle in use or op-
eration upmn the public streets, shall be equipped with at least
two front lamps throwing strong white light, sufficient to re-
veal all persons, vehicles or substantial objects for a distance
of at least 150 feet in the direction the vehicle is prooeed-
ing, and sufficient side illumination to indicate any person,
vehicle or substantial object 10 feet to the side of such
vehicle at a point 10 feet ahead of suoh lamps; said vehicle
shall also be equipped with a lamp in the rear on the left
side, showing a red light, plainly visible, in the reverse
direction to which the vehicle is proceeding, and suoh other
light so reflected as to clearly reveal the figures on the
rear number plate; provided, that motor cycles shall be equipp»
ed with one front light only in place of two front lights re-
quired for other motor vehicles. All such lamps or lights
shall at all times be kept burning while such vehicle is in use
or operation on any street, during the period of the day from
one hour after sunset until one hour before sunrise, and the
rear light or lamp, aforesaid, shall be kept burning while
such vehicle is standing on any street during the time afore-
said, except when parked within the oongested districts no
lights shall be necessary.
SECTION 10. DAZZLING LIGHTS. It shall be unlawful
to use on any vehicle, street oar or interurban car operated
or left standing on any street of Salt Lake City, any light-
ing device of over four oandle power equipped with a reflect- 1
or,, unless the same shall be so designed, reflected or
arranged that no portion of the beam of reflected light

when measured 75 feet or more ahead of the lamps, shall rise
above 42 inches from the level surface on which the vehicle
stands, under all conditions of the road. Spot lights shall
be asbdonly when projecting their rays directly on the ground,
and at a distance not exceeding 30 feet in front of the
vehicle.
BEOTION 11. LIGHTS ON HORSE VSHICLhS. No person
owning, controlling or having charge of any horse-drawn
vehicle, shall drive or permit such vehicle to stand on any
street of Salt Lake City during the period of one hour after
sunset and one hour before sunrise; unless there is attached
to the left side thereof a lighted lamp, showing a white
light toward the front, and a red light toward the rear,
each of such lights to show a reasonable distance from such
lamp; provided, that this section shall not apply to a
vehicle while loaded with loose hay or straw.
SL;CTION 12. NU TJ3LRS ON MOTOR VhHICbSS. Every motor
vehicle shall at all times while being used or operated upon
the streets of Salt hake City, display the number plates
assigned to it by the Secretary of State,of the State of Utah,
one on the front and the other on the rear of such vehicle,
both to be securely fastened in conspicuous positions so as
not to swing, and to be at all times plainly visible. No.

number plates other than those furnished by the Secretary
of State shall be used.
In case of sale or disposal of motor vehicles the •
number plates assigned to such motor vehicle must remain
thereon, and the vendor thereof must immediately notify the
Secretary of State of such sale or disposal, and the pur-

chaser must make application on a blank to be provided for
such purpose, for the transfer of suoh registration to him,
and upon the payment of a fee of $1.00, such transfer will
• be made a matter of record in the office of the Secretary
of State.
It shall be unlawful for any person to drive, use
or operate any motor vehicle on the streets of Salt Lake City
without the number plates specifically assigned to such vehicle
by the Secretary of State.
SECTION 13. BADGE. No person shall use or op-
erate a motor vehicle as ohauffeur upon the streets of Salt
Lake City without having obtained from the Secretary of State
of the State of Utah, a badge, as provided by the laws of
Utah, whioh badge shall be worn by suoh person pinned to his
clothing in a conspicuous place at all times while he is
operating such vehicle, and no such person shall voluntarily
or otherwise permit any person to wear said badge; nor shall
any person while operating said vehicle wear any such badge
belonging to another person, or wear a fictions badge.
SEECTION 14. NAME OP DRIVER. Every person en-
gaged in the business of renting or hiring out motor vehicles, 1
except motorcycles, and amplifying drivers or chauffeurs to
operate such vehicles, shall keep a record containing the
name, address and age of each driver or ohauffeur in his em-
ploy, which record shall be shown any police officer upon de-
mand. Every person lending his motor vehicle shall keep a
record of the name, age and address of the person to whom
loaned, and furnish the same on demand to a police officer.

SECTION 15. RECORD OF BUSINESS. Every person
engaged in driving a motor vehicle for hire, other than a
motorcycle, shall keep a true and exact record of every trip
he shall make between the hours of six P. M. and eight A. M.
of the next day. Said record shall show the exact time of
departure from the place of employment, the place where every
stop was made and the length of time that elapsed at each
stop, and the exact time when his employment ended, and the
plaoe where his passenger, or if more than one, where each
passenger was discharged, which record shall at all times
be open to inspeotion and copy by any police officer of this
city upon demand.
SECTION 16. STOPPING AT CURB AND AT INTERSECTIONS.
No person shall, unless in an emergency, or to allow another
vehicle, street car or interurban car or a pedestrain to pass,
park any vehicle in front of any street or alley of this city,
nor at any other plane in any street in the congested district,
except as near the right hand gutter as possible, nor nearer
than 75 feet of the crosswalk of a street intersection where
safety some standards are maintained, nor nearer the orosswalk
of any other intersection than 30 feet, nor at any other place
in said congested district where safety zones are established;
provided, the Board of Commissioners may permit for hire pass-
anger vehioles to stand parallel with the curb within the 75
foot space back from crosswalks to street intersections where
safety zones are maintained.
No person shall drive, ride or propel any vehicle
to the left of any safety zone standard or standards where
such standards are maintained on the street.

No person shall park any vehicle on any street with
the left side to the curb. Persons desiring to discharge or
take on merchandise or passengers on the left side of the
street shall cross over by making a complete turn and stopp-
ing at the curb on. the right as provided in this ordinance.
The drivers of all vehicles when desiring to turn from one
street into another from the right to the left, shall cross
to the further side of the intersection before making such
turn.
The Chief of Police, by and with the consent and
approval of the Board of Commissioners, shall have the power
at any time to make such other regulations governing the
parking of vehicles on any of the streets, avenues or alleys I
of this city, or any other space which may be owned or leased
by the city, as may, in its judgment be necessary or desirable.

No person shall without the permission of the Board
of Commissionersplace or cause to be placed on any street or
sidewalk or on any building, any sign preventing or forbidding
the parking of vehicles in the street in front of any building
or place of business.
SECTION 17. HOW LONG 11h Y 3TaND. So person shall,
between the hours of 9 1..i:I. and 6 2.I1., except on Sundays
and legal holidays, allow any vehicle to stand longer than
one hour upon any street in the congested district.
SECTION 18. HOt; a2lROLCH CUaB. Every person in
charge of a vehicle shall, in the congested district, in
parking such vehicle, approach the curb at an angle of 45
degrees and in such manner that the front right hand wheel
of such vehicle shall, when stopped, be approximately fifteen

' inches from the curb, and no part of such vehicle less then
three feet from the nearest part of any other vehicle stand-
ing at the curb. It shall be unlawful to perk any vehicle wits
any wheel of the same in any gutter.
SECTION 19. DISTT_>I'NCE FROM FIRE HYDE,JJT OR SUFra;Y
STATION. It shall be unlawful for any person to park any
I vehicle in any public street where any part of the same is
within 10 feet of either a fire hydrant or a gasoline supply
station.
SECTION 20. NOT DRIVE SIDE BY CIDE. No person
shell drive or permit to be driven or ridden any vehicle by
the side of another vehicle gym, in any street of this
oity longer than is necessary to pass such other vehicle.=
SECTION 21. VEHICLES PsSSING EaCH OTHER. Every
person riding or driving any vehicle upon the streets of this
city shall upon meeting another vehicle, pass the same to the
right, and over-taking another vehicle, shall pass to the
left thereof, and not pull over to the right until entire-
ly clear of the vehicle passed; but no person riding or driv-
ing any vehicle shall, in over-taking a street car or inter-
urban railway car,-pass to the left thereof.
SECTION 22. TURN OUT. Every person in charge of
a vehicle on any street of this city, when signalled so to
do by two blastb of a horn, or two rings of a bell, or other
signal by the driver of another vehicle approaching from
the rear, shall, when there is room so to do, pull over to
the right of the street far enough to permit such
signalling vehicle to pass on the leftWnd on the right of

SECTION 23. 1,2212 TO THE RIGHT. Every person riding,
driving or propelling any vehicle, shall, on any street, keep
to the right of the center line of such street, except in
approaching Twelfth 'bast Street on Second South Street, when
such person desires to proceed north on said 'Twelfth East
Street, or in approaching Second South Street on Twelfth East '
Street, when such person desires to proceed west on said second
South Street; in either case such person may proceed on the
left side of said streets, but in so doing shall keep to the
right of said left side. ,
SECTION 24. S,OE MOVING VEHICLES ._b) BICYCLES CLOJE
TO GUTTER. Every person driving a slow moving or heavily load-
ed vehicle, and riders of bicycles, shall keep close to the
right hand gutter, allowing more swiftly moving vehicles to
pass on the left.
SECTION 25. TURNING FROM: ONE Si'RE3T INTO aNO'THER.
Every person in charge of any vehicle when turning to the
right from one street in this city into another, shall turn
as near the right hand gutter as practicable, and in turning
to the left into another street, shall keep to the right of
the center of she intersection of the two streets.
SECTION 26. DRIVING FROM :.LLEYS. It shall be un-
lawful for any person to drive a vehicle out of an alloy into
a public thoroughfare without first bringing such vehicle to
and
a complete stop within 15 feet of the sidewelkogiving a
signal with a bell or horn.
SECTION 27. RIGHT OF ' nY. VEHIC:;;.:S. Except as
herein otherwise provided, every driver of a vehicle approach-
ing an intersection of a street, shall grant the right of way

at such intersection to any other vehicle approaching from
his right, provided that whenever a traffic officer is
stationed at any intersection, he shall have full power to
regulate the traffic.
SECTION 28. iRIGHT OF '._:Y. IN'.E?U 3:11
Interurban railway cars shall have the right of way over
street cars. Every person in charge of a street car shall
allow interurban railway cars the right of way at street
crossings.
SECTION 29. SIGHal;LITTG WHEN ,J3OU't' TO STO , 'TURN
1 OR BECK. Every person in charge of a vehicle when about to
stop, shall signal persons in charge of vehicles in the rear
by raising the hand, and in case such person is about to turn
off the street or turn around, he shall indicate to persons
in charge of vehicles in the rear with his hand the direction
in which he proposes to turn. No person in charge of a vehicle
shall back the same without ample warning having been given by
him; and while backing unceasing vigilance must be exercised
not to injure persons or property in the rear.
SECTION 30. VE ICLES NOT TO aaaJN ON IN`fER ilCTION.
No person in charge of a vehicle shall pass or attempt to
pass another vehicle's travelling in the same
direction upon any intersection in the congested district.
SECTION 31. MIRROR. ido person shall drive on any
street or avenue of this city a vehicle that is so enclosed
as to prevent the person in charge from having a complets
view of the traffic at the rear and sides of such vehicle,
so
unless there is attached to such vehicle a mirror/that the
person in charge is able to see therein the reflection of

the street or avenue one hundred feet in the rear of such
vehicle.
SECTIOE 02. DiilvlhG Pi:ST STREET ho person
operating a motor vehicle o_ motorcycle on any street or
avenue of this city shall drive any part of the same.past any
part of a street car, interurban car, or passenger train, while
the same is standing still for the purpose of taking on or
letting off passengers.
SECTION 30. C uE ID :DRIVING. Avery person in
charge of any vehicle, street car or interurban car shall
drive such vehicle and operate such car on the streets of this
city in a careful manner, and with due regard to the width,
character of traffic and use of the street being traversed,
and the safety and convenience of pedestrians and other vehicles
and cars.
SECTION 64. INT'OXIC,.ThD DRIVERS. It shall be un-
lawful for any person while under the' influence of intoxicating
liquor to drive, ride, propel, or have charge of any animal,
vehicle, street car or interurban car upon any street of this
city.

cement, brick, tiling, mo-tmr; rock, stone, lumber, timber,
pipe, poles, hay, straw, coal, furniture, hardware, print,
paper, piano fir, organ , farm implements,
boards or boxes, or any other material or substance of like
or similar kind, unless the same is to Se delivered to or
in taken from some place oin,,onetof gsaid streets. In case of
receivinganysuch or abutting
property from a place in„one of said
streets, the driver or person in control of such vehicle
shall, after receiving the same, proceed by the shortest
route out of such street, and if possible avoid going upon
or crossing any other street above mentioned, and in case
or. abutting
such property is to be delivered at a place inAany of the
streets aforesaid, the driver or person in control of such
• vehicle shall proceed to the place of delivery without, if
possible, using or crossing any of the streets above mentioned.
No person shall drive any vehicle with any poles,
• lumber, pipe or other thing extending beyond the rear of
said vehicle without having attached to the end of such ex-
tending article a red flag, at least 12 inches square, in
day time, or a red light at night.
SECTION 36. SPEED FOR VEHICLES. 2a.SSING aNILhLS,
ETC. No person shall drive, ride or propel, or cause to be
' driven, ridden or propelled any vehicle upon or along any
street of Salt Lake City, at a speed greater than is
reasonable and safe, having due regard for the width, grade,
character, traffic and common use, of such street, or so as
to endanger life, limb or property in any respect whatever;
or at a speed greater than fifteen miles per hpur upon any

street in the congestod district of the oit or y; at a speed
1 greater than at the rate of twenty-five miles per hour upon
or along any street outside of the congested district; or at
a speed greater than at the rate of twenty miles per hour in
crossing the intersection of any street outside of the con-
gested district; or at a speed greated than at the rate of
fifteen miles per hour in turning from one street into another.
Upon approaching any bridge, viaduct, dam, sharp
curve, ditch, dug-way or deep descent, or in traversing any
such bridge, viaduct, dare, sharp curve, ditch, dug-way or
deep descent, the driver or operator of any vehicle shall at
all times have the same under immediate control.
Upon approaching or passing any person walking in
the roadway or traveled part of any street, of this city, or
any horse or other draft animal being led, ridden or driven
thereon, or upon any bridge or crossing at an intersection
of any streets, the driver or operator of a motor vehicle
shall at all times have the same under immediate control;
and if such animal shall appear to be frightened, or if the
person in charge thereof, shall signal by raising his hand
or calling, the driver or operator shall immediately stop
his vehicle. If travelling in the opposite direction the
driver or operator shall hold his vehicle stationary until
such animal shall have had reasonable time to pass by; and
if travelling in the same direction, he shall use reasonable
caution in order to avoid frightening the animal or causing

SECTION 37. :BIVIPG ONLIE':.' P VELD:ET. Tao person
shall drive, ride or cause to be driven or ridden any animal,
or ride, drive or propel, or cause to ce ridden, driven or
propelled, any vehicle over or across any newly made pavement
• in any public street, across oI/around which pavement there is
a barrier, or at, over or near which there is a person or a
sign warning persons not to drive over or cross such pave-
ment, or a sign stating that the street isclosed.
S'SCTION 38. CH`1LDIHPN 01 uL_TIidG Via?ICLES. It shall
be unlawful for the owner or person in charge or control of
any vehicle to permit the same to be operated or driven upon
any street of Salt Lake City by any person under sixteen
years of age; and it shall be unlawful for any person under
sixteen years of age to operate or drive any vehicle upon
any street of Salt Lake City.

SECTION 41. RIGH' OF ;IiLY P0E FIRE ;JD POLICE
VEHICLES :ND L I3LL..i;CES. The officers and firemen and all
vehicles and apparatus of the fire department when going to
or returning from a fire, and all ambulances, whether public
or private, and all other vehicles when employed in carrying
sick or injured persons to a hospital or other place for
relief or treatment, and the officers, patrolmen and vehicles
of the police department shall have the right of way over

all other persons and vehicles on any street and through any
procession.
SECTION 42. RIGH'T OF t;:_Y FOR OTHER VEHICLES.
Vehicles used for flushing or sprinkling public streets of the
city, or for the collection of garbage, and the emergency crew
of the waterworks department, when responding to a fire or i
emergency call, shall have right of way over all other vehicles
except those carrying United States mail, ambulances, fire
department apparatus and vehicles of the police department.
SSEC'TION 45. STOP FOR FIRE D11PLET'ijE ;T. Every person'
in charge of any vehicle in or upon any street of this city,
upon the approach of any vehicle or apparatus of the fire de-
partment or any police patrol wagon, or any ambulance, or the
emergency crew of the waterworks department, or any auxiliary
fire apparatus, shall, when signalled, immediately stop such
vehicle as near as possible to the right hand curb of such
street; nor shall such vehicle be moved until suoh apparatus,
police patrol, emergency crew, auxiliary fire apparatus, or
ambulance shall have passed the :ame.
SECTION 44. VEHICLES SOT TO INTERFERE ' ITH STREET
C;ui. No person in charge of any vehicle upon the streets of this
city shall wilfully stop or drive or cause to be stopped or
driven, any such vehicle along or across any street railway
track or interurban railway track in such manner as unnecessar-
ily to hinder, delay or obstruct the movement of any car travel-
ing upon such track.

or train of cars operated by steam, electricity or any other

motive power, shall cause or permit such oar or train of
oars, or any portion of the same, to stand or be moved in„
along or across any street or sidewalk in such manner as to
prevent for a period of five minutes or longer, any per.
son or vehiole from crossing the track or tracks on whioh
such oar or train of oars are standing or being moved.
SEICTION 46. STOPPED VEHICLES NOT TO INTERFERE
WITH CROSSINGS. No person in charge of any vehiole,
street oar or interurban oar, shall cause or permit such
vehicle or oar to be stopped in or upon any street in the
oongested districts of this oity, so that any portion there.
of or of the fender attached thereto shall project beyond
the prolongation of the property lines across the street
crossing intersecting or terminating in the street, or
in or upon which such vehicle or oar is so stopped; provided
that the provisions of this section shall not apply in
case of emergency, or when such vehiole or oar is stopped
for the purpose of avoiding an accident.
SECTION 47. WHERE TO STOP CARS. No person
operating or in charge of a street oar, shall stop such
oar to tab, on or let off passengers except on the side
of the intersection such oar is approaching, at designat-
• ed stops.
SECTION 48. PEDESTRIANS, RIGHT OF WAY. Os.
STRUOTING SIDEWALKS. Every person in charge of any

vehicle or street car or interurban car shall exercise
all possible care to avoid injury to pedestrians. Ped-
estrians shall have the right of way over vehicles at
regular street crossings at intersections and half-way
between street intersections, except where the crossing
is closed by signal as provided by ordinance.
Every pedestrian shall keep to the right of
the sidewalk or street crossing and shall not obstruct

by others. Pedestrians shall not stop or stand so as
to obstruct use of the sidewalk.
It shall be unlawful for pedestrians to cross
the street at any point other than at regular street
crossings at interseotionsund half way between street
intersections.

No pedestrian shall interfere with the movement of

SECTIODT 50. T.2..2..FFIC OFFIC:ILZS The Chief of
`:'olice shall designate police officers to attend upon the
public streets to control the movements, and order the stoppage
of vehicles, street cars and interurban cars in or upon such
streets, in order to .,srevent congestion of traffic, and to
prevent accidents. LL:n ,police officer designated ay the Chief
of Police to perform such duty, shall control the movements
• and order the stoppage of vehicles, street cars, interurban
cars and pedestrians in or upon such .;-ublic streets for the
:_purposes herein set forth. The movement and stoppage of
vehicles, street cars, interurban cars and edestri.ns at street
intersections shall be governed as follows:
One blast of a police vir istle or a raising of a hand indi-
cates that the east and west bound traffic, including pedestrians,
must stop and that north and south bound traffic may proceed;
provided, that street cars and interurban railway cars turning
from a northerly or southerly direction to the east or west
shall proceed upon the sounding of one blast of such police
thistle, and shall stop upon the sounding of two blasts thereof.

partment, or some other emergency, and all vehicles, street
cars and interurban railway ears, and _,edestrians, shall stop
until permitted br the police officers to proceed.

When a semaphore or other signalling apparatus is
installed at a street intersection, upon the appearance of a
red light thereon all vehicles, animals, street cars, inter-
,
urban cars and pedestrians proceeding in the direction of
such light shall atop before entering the intersection, and
(shall not proceed while such light is displayed. When such
red light is removed and a green light displayed, such vehicles,
animals, street cars, interurban cars and pedestrians may pro-
ceed as hereinbefore in this section provided.
SECTION 51. COLTLY WITH ORDER OF 'TELPFIC OFFICERS.
It shall be unlawful for any person to fail to comply to the
direction given by voice, hand, whistle or light by any police
officer or by signalling apparatus, when stationed at any in •

tersection for the purpose of directing traffic.
SECTION 52. MOVE :HEN ;JE i'TED. Every person in
charge of any animal or vehicle standing along or near the
curb of any street within the congested districts, shall, at
the request of any police officer, move sumlik animal or vehicle
• away from such curb.
SECTION 53. COOLY WITH TR.1FFIC CIGES. Every person
shall comply with any instruction or direction displayed by the
'Chief of Police upon any post, standard, sign, or device for
the regulation of traffic in any public street.
SEC'TION 54. QUIET actioltailmtediartXXXItie Chief of Police may es-
tablish zones of quiet in the vicinity of hospitals and other
public institutions, and other places, and notices shall be
conspicuously placed designating the limits of such zones.

shall exercise special care to approach and proceed through
such tones as noiselessly as possible.
SECTION 55. INJURING TRAFFIC SIGNS. No person
shall drive into, deface, injure, move or interfere with any
sign, standard, poet, chain, rope, or other device installed
or placed to.indicate safety cones or for the purpose of
directing or regulating traffic.
S'ECTION 56. NAILS, THROWN ON STREETS. No person
shall threw® deposit or place in or upon any public street,
1 of this city any nails, tacks, crockery, scrap iron, tin,
wire, bottles, glass, boxes, wood, boards, stone, thorns,
or thorny clippings, or thorny branches of trees or bushes,
or any other article or thing likely to puncture or injure
the tire of any vehicle.
SECTION 57. AOCIDENT. In case of an aooident to
any person or property on any of the streets of the City,
where the operation of any vehicle is involved, the person
operating or in charge of such vehicle shall stop, and upon
the ruttiest of any person present, shall give such person his
name and address, and if not the owner of suoh vehicle, the
name and address of such owner.
SECTION 58. ROLLER SEATING. It shall be unlawful
for any person to skate with roller skates upon any of the

EC'CION 60. BICYCLES ON 3IDMAI.K. It shall be un—
lawful for any person to ride any bicycle upon any sidewalk
within the city, except that between the hours of 3 o'clock
and 8 o'clock a. m. and between 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock p. m,

ridden upon any sidewalk where the street is not paved, or •

SECTION 61. RATE OF SPED. It shall be unlawful
for any person to ride any bicycle upon any bicycle path
or street in this city at a rate of speed treater than 12
miles per hour, or upon any sidewalk in this city at a 'rate

SECTION 63. TAKING .V-NIC1ES WITHOUT PEE I5SION.
It shall be unlawful for any person to take, use, operate,
attempt to operate, manipulate, tamper with, set in motion,
attempt to set in motion, drive or ride in any motor vehicle
or person in lawful possession
in Salt Lake City without permission of the owner/thereof,
provided, however, members of the policed lax fire departments
may remove such vehicles parked in the streets upon the ex-.
istence of such emergency as reeuires such action.
SECTION 64. USING ST .EET3 FOE STORAGE. It shall
be unlawful for any person, either as owner, occupant, agent
or employee of any garage, livery stable, wagon shop,
blacksmith shop, sales room or other place of business to
whether
suffer or permit any vehicle lighemorleft for safe keeping,
repairs, sale or otherwise, to be or remain upon any street
or sidewalk, or to do or permit to be done any repairing of
1 any vehicle while the same stands upon any part of a public
street or sidewalk, except only'emergency repairs or chang—
ing of tires.
SECTION 65. EXCEPTION. The provisions of Sections
16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 27,.32, 35, 40, 45, 49, 52, 50,
51, and 53 of this ordinance shall not apply to any vehicle
or the person in charge of any vehicle connected with the
Fire Department or Police Department of this city when in
the performance of duty.
SECTION 66. EXCEPTION. The provisions of Sec—
tions 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 27, 29, 32, 35, 45, 49, 50,
52 and 53 of this ordinance shall not apply to vehicles of
any auxiliary fire apparatus belonging to any person, firm
or corporation engaged in furnishing gas or electricity to

Salt Lake City or its inhabitants, or the person in charge of
such vehicle when responding to a fire call.
SECTION 67. EXCEPTION. The provisions of Sections
16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 27, 29, 31, 35, 45, 49, 50, 51,
52 and 53 of this ordinance shall not apply to vehicles carry-
ing the emergency crew of the waterworks department or to the
persons in charge of such vehicles, or the occupants of the
same when responding to an emergency or fire call.
SECTION 68. EXCEPTION. The provisions of Sections
16, 17, 19, 21, 24, 29, 39 and 45 of this ordinance shall not
apply to vehicles or to the persons in charge of vehicles of
the health department in the collection of garbage.
SECTION 69. EXCEPTION. The provisions of Sections
rX , 16, 18, 22, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29 end 39 of this
ordinance shall not apply to sprinkling or street flushing or
street cleaning vehicles operated by Salt Lake City, or the
persons in charge of the same, while engaged in cleaning,
sprinkling or flushing streets of the city.
SECTION 70. PENALTY. Any person violating any of
the provisions of this ordinance shall upon conviction be
punished by a fine of not more than Two Hundred and Ninety-
nine 0299.00) Dollars or by imprisonment in the City Jail
by
for not more than six months, or,,both such fine and imprison-
ment. The court may in imposing the fine enter as part of 1
the judgment that in default of the payment of the fine the
defendant be imprisoned in the City Jail for a period not
