Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah: SECTION 1. That Chapter 1 of Title 5, of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to the Uniform Building Code, be, and the same hereby is, amended by adding thereto two new sections, Section 5-1-24, relating to Alternative Materials and Methods of Construction, and Section 5-1-25, relating to Definitions, to read as follows: "Sec. 5-1-24. Alternative materials and methods of con- struction. Section 106 of the Uniform Building Code, 1973 Edition, adopted by Section 5-1-1 of this chapter, is amended to read as follows: Sec. 106. The provisions of this Code are not intended to prevent the use of any material or method of construction not specifically prescribed by this Code, provided any such alternate has been approved. The Building Official may approve in writing upon written petition by the holder of a building permit any such alter- nate provided he finds that the proposed design is satis- factory and complies with the provisions of Chapter 23, and that the material, method, or work offered is, for the purpose intended at least the equivalent of that prescribed in this Code in quality, strength, effectiveness, fire resistence, durability, and safety. The Building Official shall require that sufficient evidence or proof be submitted to substantiate any claims that may be made regarding its use. For the requirements as an approved fabricator see Sections 305 and 402." "Sec. 5-1-25. Definitions. Section 3301(c) of the Uniform Building Code, 1973 Edition, adopted by Section 5-1-1 of this chapter, is amended to read as follows: Sec. 3301(c). Definitions. For the purpose of this chapter, certain terms are defined as follows: BALCONY, EXTERIOR EXIT, is a landing or porch projecting from the wall of a building, and which serves as a required means of egress. The long side shall be at least 50 percent open, and the open area above the guardrail shall be so distributed as to prevent the accumulation of smoke or toxic gases. Q3'i -2- EXIT is a continuous and unobstructed means of egress to a public way, and shall include intervening doors, doorways, corridors, exterior exit balconies, ramps, stairways, smokeproof enclosures, horizontal exits, exit passageways, exit courts, and yards. EXIT COURT is a yard or court providing egress to a public way for one or more required exits. EXIT PASSAGEWAY is an enclosed means of egress connecting a required exit or exit court with a public way. FLOOR is the horizontal structural plane immediately below a story, basement or cellar. HORIZONTAL EXIT is a way of passage from one building into another building on approximately the same level, or is a way of passage through or around a wall constructed as required for a two-hour occupancy separation and which completely divides a floor into two or more separate areas so as to establish an area of refuge affording safety from fire or smoke coming from the area from which escape is made. OCCUPANT LOAD is the total number of persons that may occupy a building or portion thereof at any one time. PANIC HARDWARE is a bar which extends across at least one-half the width of each door leaf, which will open the door if subjected to pressure. PRIVATE STAIRWAY is a stairway serving one tenant only. PUBLIC WAY is any parcel of land unobstructed from the ground to the sky, more than 10 feet in width, appropriated to the free passage of the general public." SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners it is necessary to the peace, health and welfare of the inhabitants of Salt Lake City that this ordinance become effective immediately. SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first pub- lication.
