Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah: _ SECTION 1. That Sections 149(c), 153, 155, 156, 157, 159 and 160 of Article 8 of the Traffic Code of Salt Lake City, 1955, relating to parking, be, and the same hereby are, amended to read as follows: "Sec. 149(c) Parking meter. Parking meter shall mean and include any mechanical device installed within or upon the curb or sidewalk area immediately contiguous to a parking meter space which, when the mechanism thereof is set in motion, indicates that the vehicle parking contiguous thereto is legally parked. "Sec. 153. Fifteen minute meter spaces. The City Traffic Engineer is hereby authorized iy and with the approval of the City Commission to create fifteen minute parking meter spaces within any parking meter zone by the installation of parking meters providing for a maximum parking time of fifteen minutes. No person shall permit any vehicle to remain parked in any parking meter space adjacent to any fifteen minute meter for a continuous period of longer than fifteen minutes, or at any time when the meter violation indicator is shown. "Sec. 155. Thirty minute meter s aces. The City Traffic Engineer is hereby authorized- y an wit the approval of the City Commission to create thirty minute parking meter spaces within any parking meter zone by the installation of parking meters providing for a maximum parking time of thirty minutes. No person shall permit any vehicle to remain parked in any parking meter space adjacent to any. thirty minute metes' for a continuous period of longer than thirty minutes, or at any time when the meter violation indicator is shown. "Sec. 156. Parking meter installation. The City Traffic Engineer shall cause to—FTTnstalled contiguous to each designated parking meter space such parking meter as shall have been approved by the City Commission. Each such meter shall be so designed that the deposit of a coin or coins will set the mechanism of the meter in motion, or permit the said mechanism to be set in motion, so that the meter will show that a vehicle may lawfully be parked in the designated parking space contiguous to said meter, and to indicate a termination of legal parking therein by a visible sign. Whenever a violation sign is visible the meter is in violation regardless of what other signs may be visible. 1 14.'106 200 1.58 Q.P. -2- "No person shall park any vehicle in any parking meter space, except as otherwise permitted by this ordinance, without im- mediately depositing in the parking meter contiguous to said space such lawful coin or coins of the United States as are required for such meter and as designated by directions on the meter, and when required by the directions on the meter, setting in operation the timing mechanism thereof in accordance with said directions, unless said parking meter indicates at the time such vehicle is parked that legal parking time remains. "No person, except as otherwise provided by this ordinance, shall permit any vehicle parked by him to remain parked in any parking meter space during any time when the parking meter contiguous to said space indicates that no portion remains of the period for which the last previous coin has, or coins have, been deposited, or beyond the time limited for parking in such by virtue of the provisions in sections 150 to 155 inclusive. "Any person unintentionally violating any provision of this article, by reason of mechanical failure of a parking meter not caused by such person, may be acquitted of such violation upon establishing such facts by a preponderance of evidence. The authority to acquit such individual shall rest solely with the City Court. "Sec. 157. Coin. Period allowed. (a) Permission to park in the parking meter space of a four hour parking meter zone shall be granted only upon the deposit of a five cent coin, or coins, or a ten cent coin, or coins, lawful money of the United States, in the parking meter contiguous to such parking meter space and then only for the period of time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin or coins. ":(b) Permission to park in the parking meter space of a two hour parking meter zone shall be granted only upon the deposit of a five cent coin, or coins, or a ten cent coin, lawful money of the United States, in the parking meter contiguous to such parking meter space and then only for the period of time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin or coins. "(c) Permission to park in the parking meter space of a one hour parking meter zone shall be granted only upon the deposit of a five cent coin, or coins, or a ten cent coin, lawful money of the United States, in the parking meter contiguous to such parking meter space and then only for the period of time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin or coins. "(d) Permission to park in the parking meter space of a thirty minute parking meter zone shall be granted only upon the deposit of a five cent coin, or a ten cent coin, lawful money of the United States, in the parking meter contiguous to such parking meter space and then only for the period of time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin or coins. "(e) Permission to park in a fifteen minute parking meter space shall be granted only upon the deposit of a five cent coin, or a ten cent coin, lawful money of the United States, in the parking meter contiguous to such parking meter space and then only for the period of time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin or coins. "Sec. 159. Use of unexpired legal parking time. The driver of a vehicle entering a parking space at a time when Ra log 200 1-58 Q.P. -3- the meter for such space shows unexpired legal parking time may permit such vehicle to remain parked in such space for such time as the meter indicates legal parking time remains, and may, by depositing the proper coin or coins remain parked in such space for the amount of time allowed therein subject to the limitations provided in sections 150, 151, 152, 153 and 154. "Sec. 160. Exempted periods. Parking meter spaces may be used without charge on all days of the week between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., and during all hours on Sundays and Utah legal holidays, as defined in Sec. 147(b)." SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners, it is necessary to the peace, health and safety of the inhabitants of Salt Lake City that this ordinance shall become effective immediately. SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first publication.
