AN ORDINANCE AMENDING Section 30-1-14 of the Revised Ordinances
of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to ranking officers.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
Utah:
SECTION 1. That Section 30-1-14 of the Revised Ordinances of
Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to ranking officers, be, and the
same hereby is amended as follows:
Sec. 30-1-14. Ranking officers. Command shall be exercised
by virtue of office and special assignment of officers eligible
by law and ordinance to command. The officers of the department
shall rank in the following order:
(1) Chief of police.
(2) Lieutenant colonel - deputy chief.
(3) Majors - assistant chiefs of police in order of seniority
in grade as major.
(4) Captains - in order of seniority in grade as captain.
(5) Lieutenants - in order of seniority in grade as lieutenant.
(6) Sergeants - in order of seniority in grade as sergeant.
In the absence of the chief of police, the performance of his
duties shall evolve upon the lieutenant colonel and in case of
the absence of the lieutenant colonel through disability or
otherwise, then upon the next ranking officer as above specified.
Seniority in the case of the lieutenant colonel and majors shall
not include time previously served as a major or lieutenant
colonel but shall include time only from the date of consecutive
service as a major or lieutenant colonel. Officers of same rank
having the same date of appointment shall have their order of
command seniority determined by their position on the civil service
list, the seniority given to the officer highest on said list.
Administratively appointed ranks having the same date of appoint-
ment shall have their order of command seniority specified by the
chief on the date of appointment.
SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, it is necessary to the health, peace and welfare of the
inhabitants of Salt Lake City that this ordinance become effective
immediately.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first
publication.
