HomeMy WebLinkAbout20 of 1901 - Ordinance 20 of 1901 - For the construction of bicycle paths and regulating use of bicycles. • BILL NO. �_� FOR AN ORDINANCE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF BICYCLE PATHS AND REGULATING THE USE OF BICYCLES. Be it Ordained by the City Council cf Salt Lake City, Utah, that; Seo.1. Salt Lake City by and through its .roper officers anlc agents shall at once commence to build and construct and shall continue with reasonable dispatch until completed, suitdble arc .roper bicycle paths upon ann along all o the public streets of Salt Lake City except .,aved streets, situate and b:cing with. the district bounded by the North line of South Temple Street, the East dine of Fifth aast.Street the South line of Sixth South Street and the West line 1$ off Second West Street, provided that on South Temple, First South and Second Soot Streets said paths shall extend to and including 10th East Street on the East, and, on Second South Street to and including 5th Test Street on the West and on South Temple Street to an includinf gad Third West Street on the West. Sec.2. Said bicycles oaths shall be constructed five feet in width on both sides of said streets in said district, along the whole extent of arc ad- joining the sidewalks thereof. Where necessary for irrigating, suitable ditches shall bd excavated in the sail streets five and one half feet from the outer edge of the sidewalk ant running parallel therewith, and all irrigating water shall be run in said ditches. The ditches running along sail streets where said paths ehallbe constructed as hereinabove designated, as well as all other depressions and excavations on salc strip of five feet shallbe filled and the surface of the ground made h:> u4-t 14 +f ays==8f t e r :,pa,•tdae. A l o n g such place or places where no irrigating ditches shall be excavated between the said/paths and the street the outer wall of sail path or paths shall be retained apd protected by some suitable structure for that purpose. When constructed, e l rock or other obstructing material shall be removed from said paths, and the surface of said paths shall be covered with cinders or gravel and shall be rolled land made even. All carriage steps and hitching pcsts shall be placed on the oute ledge of said paths or eoroac or on the outer edge of sail ditches between the said ;'Laths and the stri(et, but not on said p ths. Sec.3. It shall be the duty of the Supervisor of streets of said 1 City to maintain and keep sail bicycle paths in Fool repair, and to keep the same 1 free from all rock and all other obstructions. Section 4. It Shall not be lawful for any Person to walk or ride upon the smii laths, except when riding or wheeling a bicycle, and except in the \necessary crossings of sail paths to and from the sidewalks and adjoining premises. Nor •shall it be lawful fcr any Herson to ride, drive, or lead, or pexx permit any animal, or drive, run, operate, or permit any vehicle except a ;bicycle thereon except in tha, sail nece:>sary crossing_ of said paths to and from 'the sidewalks and adjoining premises. Nor shall it be lawful f m any person to ,:place garbage, rubbish or obstacle or any other obstruction on said paths. Seo.5. It shall be lawful for any .lerson to ride a bicycle upon any )ublic sidewalk within said City not within the said district hereinbefore esig_nated; and upon public sidewalks within said district, except paved streets, • ,:,��, r , , ,., .:; 20 � . ' f from and between the 1st day of October and the 1st of tav of each year, where aiding sail sidewalks, bicycle oaths are not constructed. Sec. 6. All persons riding or wheeling any bicycle on said paths or sidewalks when meeting another shall seasonably before such meeting, turn to their right. Sec.11. All ordinances, resolutions and parts of ordinances and resolutions in conflict with this ordinance or any part thereof are hereby repealed and this ordinance shall take effect upon its approval.
