AN OR DI NAN CE .
An ordinance governing and regulating the operation of street rail-
ways.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That the following rules and regulations are hereby estab-
lished for the government and operation of street railroads, and shall be
observed and complied with by every person, firm, company or corporation
owning or operatjig a street railroad within Salt Lake City, and by the
agents, officersand employeei of any such person, firm, company or corpo-
ration: l -
1. It shale, be unlaesgd`to run a street car at a greater rate of
speed then is henain provided, to-wit: On Main Street, State Street and

West Temple Street between'the north line of South Temple Street and the
south line of Seventh South Street, the rate of speed shall not exceed
nine miles per hour. On all other streets the rate of speed shall not ex-
ceed twelve miles per hour. On any bridge or viaduct the rate of speed
shall not exceed five miles per hour. No car shall pass around any curve
at a greater rate of speed than five miles per hour.
2. All cars shall be provided with a signal bell or gong, which shall
be sounded at least one hundred feet distant from any car coming in an op-
posite direction, and shall be continuously sounded while passing such car.
On all cars such bell or gong shall also be sounded at least one hundred
feet distant from all street intersections, and shall be continuously
sounded yhile passing the same.

greatest oars and caution, and at the lowest rate of speed possible, and

person running said car shall sound its bell or gong as it approaches such
oar, and shall sound its bell or gong continuously until such car shall
have been passed.
4. Cara shall be stopped at all street intersections whenever any
person may desire to leave or enter the same.

5. No oar shall be allowed to stop en,a crosswalk nor in front of
any intervening street, except to avoid collision, or to prevent danger to
persons or property in the street, nor shall any car be left standing in
any street or highway at any time unless the same be waiting for passengers
6. The conductor, motorman, or other person in charge of each oar
shall keep a vigilant watch for all teams, vehicles, persons on foot, and
espeoially for children, either on the track or tracks, or near the same,
or moving toward the same, and on the first appearance of danger to such
team, vehicle or person, said car shall be placed under careful control,
and shall be stopped in the shortest time and space possible.
7. Thb.00nduotor shall not permit any person to get on or get off a
oar while the same is in motion; and every conductor or other person in
oharge of a car shall, before giginv a signal to start the same, asoertain
that all persons who desire to do so, have alighted therefrom.
O. The conductor shall distinotly announce to passengers the names
of the stxe6ts along the route.
9. All oars shall be plainly marked on both sides with appropriate
lettering, indicating the streets or routes upon which the same run.
n10. Whenever, in any of the streets, highways, or thoroughfares of
this city, any street oar is propelled backwards, or in the direction op-
posite to which oars usually travel on the track on which said oar is then
being operated, the conductor in charge of said car shall walk ahead of the
same in the direction in which such car is moving until such car stops
moving backward, and shall warn pedestrians and others using the street,
highway or thoroughfare of the approach of said car.
11. Where oars stop at the end of a track or route, such car shall
sound its bell or gong at least one minute before starting on its return
trip.
12. On each_oar shall be carried a jack screw capable of lifting at
least half the weight of such car; such jackscrew shall be used in case
of accidents where any person or thine, may be caught,.under the car.
SECTIOIT 2. Any person, firm, company or corporation, or any emfo

agent or servant of any such person, firm, company or corporation, violat-
ing any of the provisions of this ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a
misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of
not less than $25.00, nor more than 299.00, or by imprisonment in the
City Jail not more than six month, or by both such fine and imprisonment. �f
