AN ORDINANCE AMENDING Chapter 12, Title 15, relating to paint spray-
ing requirements under the title Fire Prevention, by adding thereto a new
section to be known as Section 15-12-12, relating to Bowling Alleys.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah.
SECTION 1. That Chapter 12, Title 15, relating to paint spraying
requirements under the title Fire Prevention, be and the same is hereby
amended by adding thereto a new section to be known as Section 15-12-12,
relating to Bowling Alleys:
"Sec. 15-12-12. Bowling Alleys. Bowling alleys shall
conform to all other applicable requirements of this code, as
well as the following provisions.
"(a) ALLEY RESURFACING OPERATIONS. Resurfacing operations
shall not be carried on while the establishment is open for
business. The Bureau of Fire Prevention shall be notified when
alleys are to be resurfaced. Proper ventilation shall be provi-
ded. Heating, ventilating, or cooling systems employing recircu-
lation of air shall not be operated during resurfacing operations
or within one hour following the application of flammable finishes.
All electric motors or other equipment in the area which might be
a source of ignition shall be shut down, and all smoking and use
of open flames prohibited during the application of flammable
finishes and for one hour thereafter.
"(b) PIN REFINISHING. Pin refinishing involving the appli-
cation of flammable finishes shall be done only in a special room,
meeting the requirements of section 15-9-2; such room shall not
be located below grade nor shall it have communication with any
pits, wells, pockets or basements.
"Storage of flammable liquids in such rooms shall not exceed
a combined aggregate of 60 gallons in original metal containers,
or in approved safety containers not exceeding 5 gallons individual
capacity. A metal waste can with self-closing cover shall be
provided for all waste materials and rags; contents shall be removed
daily. Smoking shall be prohibited at all times in refinishing
rooms."
SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners, it is nec-
essary to the peace, health and safety of the inhabitants of Salt Lake
City that this ordinance shall become effective immediately.

SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first publica-
tion.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah, this
24th day of April, 1957.
