AN ORDINANCE AMENDING Sections 149 (c), 153, 155, 156, 157 and 159, of Article 8 of the Traffic Code of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1955, as amended by Bill No. 15 of 1958, passed the 26th day of March, 1958, relating to "Parking". Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah. SECTION 1: That Sections 149 (c), 153, 155, 156, 157 and 159, of Article 8 of the Traffic Code of Salt Lake City, Utah, as amended by Bill no. 15 of 1958, passed the 26th day of March, 1958, relating to "Parking", be and the same hereby are amended to read as follows: "Sec. 149 (c) Parking meter. Parking meter shall mean and include any mechanical device installed within or upon the curb or sidewalk area immediately contiguous to a parking meter space which, where the mechanism thereof is set in motion, indicates unexpired parking time for the vehicle parking contiguous thereto. "Sec. 153. Twelve minute meter spaces. The City traffic engineer is hereby authorized by and with the approval of the City Commission to create twelve minute parking meter spaces within any parking meter zone by the installation of parking meters providing for a maximum parking time of twelve minutes. No person shall permit any vehicle to remain parked in any parking meter space adjacent to any twelve minute meter for a continuous period of longer than twelve minutes, or at any time when the meter violation indicator is shown. "Sec. 155. 36 minute meter spaces. The City Traffic Engineer is hereby authorized by and with the approval of the City Commission to create 36-minute parking meter spaces within any parking meter zone by the installation of parking meters providing for a maximum parking time of 36 minutes. No person shall permit any vehicle to remain parked in any parking meter space adjacent to any 36 minute meter for a continuous period of longer than 36 minutes, or at any time when the meter violation indicator is shown. -1- `) R 108 200 I-58 Q.P. u `.J v• `J J "Sec. 156. Parking meter installation. The City Traffic Engineer shall cause to be installed contiguous to each designated parking meter space such parking meter as shall have been approved by the City Commission. Each such meter shall be so designated that the deposit of a coin or coins will set the mechanism of the meter in motion, or permit the said mechanism to be set in motion, so that the meter will show the unexpired parking time applicable to the parkingneter space contiguous to the meter, and said meter when said parking time has expired shall so indicate by a visible sign. Whenever said sign is visible, the meter is in violation even though the indica- tor/may show unexpired time. hand "No person shall park any vehicle in any parking meter space, except as otherwise permitted by this ordinance, without immediately depositing in the parking meter contiguous to said space such lawful coin or coins of the United States as are required for such meter and as designated by directions on the meter, and when required by the directions on the meter, setting in operation the timing mechanism thereof in accordance with said directions, unless said parking meter indicates at the time such vehicle is parked that an unexpired portion remains of the period for which a coin or coins has been previously deposited. "No person, except as otherwise provided by this ordinance, shall permit any vehicle parked by kiln to remain parked in any parking meter space during any time when the parking meter contiguous to said space indicates that no portion remains of the period for which the last previous coin or coins has been deposited, or beyond the time limited for parking in such by virtue of the provisions in Sections 150 to 155 inclusive. "Any person unintentionally violating any provision of this article, by reason of mechanical failure of a parking meter not caused by such person, may be acquitted of such violation upon establishing such facts by a preponderance of evidence. The authority to acquit such individual shall rest solely with the City Court. "Sec. 157. Coin. Period allowed. (a) Permission to park in the parking meter space of a four hay parking meter zone shall be granted only upon the deposit of a five cent coin, two five cent coins, or a ten cent coin, lawful money of the United States, it he parking meter at or near the front or forward end of such parking meter space and then only for the time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin or coins. "(b) Permission to parlyln the parking meter space of a two hour parking meter zone shall be granted only upon the deposit of a five cent coin, two five cent coins, or one to ten one cent coins, lawful money of the United States, in the parking meter at or near the front or forward end of such parking meter space and then one for the period of time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin or coins. "(c) Permission to parlgin the parking meter space of a one hour parking meter zone shall be granted only upon the deposit of one five cent coin or one to five one cent coins, lawful money of the United States, in the parking meter at or near the front or forward end of such parking meter space and then only for the period of time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin or coins. "(d) Permission to park in a twelve minute parking meter space shall be granted only upon the deposit of a one cent coin, lawful money of the United States, in the parking meter at or near the front or forward end of such parking meter space and then only for the period of time indicated by the meter upon insertion of such coin. "Sec. 159. Use of unexpired time. The driver of a vehicle entering a parking space at a time when the meter for such space shows unexpired time may permit such vehicle to remain parked in such space for the amount of unexpired time shown upon such meter, and may be depositing the proper coin or coins remain parked in such spade for the amount of time allowed therein subject to the limitations provided in sections 150, 151, 152, 153 and 154." SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, it is necessary to the peace, health and safety of the inhabitants of Salt Lake City that this ordinance shall become effective immediately.
