AN ORDINANCE .
An ordinance to prohibit gambling or gating of every kind,
betting, wagering, or staking money or thing of value on the resul,
of horse races or oontests of skill or endurance of men or animals
by means of book-making, pools, turf exchanges or like schemes of
devices.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake Cit ,
Utah:
SECTION 1. All gambling and gaming of every kind and descrip
tion, by playing at cards, dice, faro, roulette, keno, poker, slot
machines, devices known as trades maohines, or any like machines
or devices by whatever name known, or any other contrivance or de-
vice by or with which money, merchandise or any thing of value may
be staked, bet, hazarded, won or lost, upon chance, or at any othe•
game or scheme of chance whatever, and by betting on the result of
horse races, or on the result of any contest of skill or endurance
of men or animals by means of book making, pools, turf exchanges
or other devices, for money or other property or thing of value
within Salt Lake City, is hereby declared to be unlawful.
SECTION 2. It shall be unlawful for any person to play, stair: ,
wager, or bet any money, property or thing of ♦alue at any game,
scheme or device by this ordinance prohibited, or to own, conduct,
keep or carry on any such game, scheme or device, either as owner,
dealer, operator, agent or employee.
SECTION 3. It shall be unlawful for any person to bet or wag.r
money or any thing of value on the result of any horse race or
races, or on the result of any contest of skill or endurance of me•
or animals by means of book making, pools or other devices, in any
place commonly known as a turf exchange, or where pool selling or
book making for the purpose of enabling bets and wagers for money
or things of value on such races or contests to be made, had or
received, is conducted and carried on.
SECTION 4. It shall be unlawful for any person to conduct;

keep or maintain a house, building, room or other plane where any
of the games or aachemes herein prohibited are carried on, conduct
or operated. It shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly per
mit or suffer any of the games or schemes herein declared unlawful
to be carried on, or kept, maintained or operated in any house,
building, room or other place owned by him in whole or in part,or
by him let or leased to any other person.
SECTION 6. It shall be unlawful for any person to conduct,
keep, carry on, or maintain, by himself or his agents or employees
any turf exohange, pool room, or other place, by whatever name
known, where bets or wagers on the result of any horse race, when.
ever run, or of any contest of skill or endurance of men or animal ,
wherever made or had, are, or may be made, received or paid.
SECTION 6. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or
maintain any slot machine, or trades machine, or any like machine
or device, for the purpose of suffering or permitting other person
to play at or with the same for money or anything of value.
SECTION 7. It shall be unlawful for any person, either as
owner, lessee, agent, employee, mortgagee or otherwise, to operate,
keep, maintain, rent, use or conduct, within the City of Salt Lake,
any clock, tape, slot, trades or card machine, or any other machin-,
contrivance or device upon which money is staked or hazarded
chance, or into which money is paid, deposited or played upon
Chance, or upon the result of the action of which money,or 8nyAtem '
modity or merchandise, or any other article or tking of value is
staked, bet, hazarded, won or lost upon chance.
SECTION 8. It shall be unlawful for ani pe}eon, either as
owner, lessee, agent, employee, mortgagee or otherwise, to operate,
keep, maintain, rent, use or conduct within the City of Salt Lake,
any machine, contrivance, appliance or mechanical device,upon the
result of the action of which money or any commodity, merchandise
or other valuable thing is staked, or hazarded, and which is oper-
ated or played by placing or depositing therein any coins, auk ti-

tutes for coins, checks, slugs, balls, or other article or device,
or in any other manner, and by means of the action whereof, or as
result of the operation of which, any merchandise, money, represen,a-
Li tive or article of value, cheok, or token redeemable in, or exchan;e-
able for money, or any other thing of value is won or lost, or tak:n i
from or obtained from such machine, when the result of the action
or operation of such machine, oontrivence, appliance, or meohanioa
device, is dependent upon hazard or ohana..
SECTION 9. Any person violating any of the provisions of thi:
ordinance, upon conviction, shall be punished by a fine of not mor=
than $50.00, or by imprisonment in the city jail for not more than
thirty days, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
The word "person", as employed in this ordinance, shall be
deemed to include co-partnership, corporation or association of
persons. ;
- SECTION 10. No person shall be excused from attending and
testifying, or from producing books, papers and documents before
any court having jurisdiction of the offenses herein defined, upon
the ground, or for the reason that the testimony or evidence, doc-
umentary or otherwise, required of him may tend to incriminate him
or subject him to a penalty or forfeiture. But no person shall be •
prosecuted or subjected to any penalty or forfeiture on account of
any prosecution, matter or thing ooncerning which he may produce
evidence, documentary or otherwise, before any court as aforesaid.
SECTION 11. All ordinances and resolutions, or parts of ordi-
nanoes and resolutions in conflict with this ordinance, are hereby
repealed; provided, however, that all offenses included in this
ordinance, which are defined in prior ordinances, and which have

been committed prior to the taking effect of this ordinance, shall
be prosecuted and punished as in such prior ordinances provided.
SECTION 12. This ordinance shell take effect on and after Via
