An ordinance amending Section 950 of Chapter 41 of the
Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 19,1.3, relating to the
Police Department, as amended by an ordinance passed by the
Board of Commissioners August 7, 1916.
Be it ordained 'by the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Section 950 of Chapter 41 of the Revised
Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1913, relating to the Police
Department, as amended by an ordinance passed by the Board of
Commissioners August 7, 1916, be, and the same is hereby
amended to read as follows:
SECTION 950. POLICE DEPARTMENT. The Police Department
of Salt Lake City shall consist of the following officers,
men, employees and agents, whose duties and compensation
shall be as fixed by ordinance:
One Chief of Police, who shall be at the head of the
police department;
One Inspector, with the rank of senior captain;
One Chief of Detectives, who shall be at the head of
the detective department, and who shall report to the Chief
of Police alone;
One Captain;
One Junior Captain;

Two Lieutenants;
One Secretary t o the Chief of Polioe;
One Property Clerk;
One Matron;
One Janitor;
One hundred and fifteen patrolmen of three grades, to-
wit: First grade, second grade and third grade.
Patrolmen without previous experience,.shall be appoint-
ed to the third grade only, and may be promoted upon recom-
mendation of the Chief of Police after service of one year,
if, in the opinion of the Chief of Police,-.their service
and ability entitles them to promotion. The ¢hief of Police
may appoint into the second grade appliaants who, in addi-
tion to regular requirements, have served at least one year.
in the third grade in this service, or two years in police
or detective service outside the police department of Salt
Lake City, or a term of enlistment in the United. States
Army. The Chief of Police may appoint into the first grade
applicants who, in addition to regular requirements, and having
had two or more years service in police and detective work,
are espeoially qualititd for police service.
All applicants must successfully pass such examinations
as may be re;uired by the prescribed rules and regulations.
The Board of Commissioners may by resolution employ
such other employees or laborers as it may deem necessary for
the proper conduct of said. department.
SECTION 2. This ardinanoe shall take effect thirty-one days
after its passage. 11 �
