AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 439, Revised Ordinances of
Salt Lake City, Utah, 1920, relating to moving picture houses.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, Utah:
SECTION I. That Section 439, Revised Ordinances of Salt
Lake City, Utah, 1920, be amended in the following particulars,
to-wit: That the first and second paragraphs of said section and
subdivisions A. and C, and the second paragraph in subdivision
J be and the same are hereby amended to read as follows:
All places of amusement to be constructed, erected
or altered wherein moving pictures are exhibited for public
entertainment, and where an admission fee is charged, having
a seating capacity of 600 or more persons, shall be built
and constructed to conform to all laws, conditions and re-
quirements now existing or hereafter to come in force and
effect relating to theatres and places where theatrical or
operatic performances are given.
All such places of amusement hereafter to be con-
structed, erected or altered, wherein moving pictures are
exhibited for public entertainment, and where an admission
fee is charged, having a seating capacity of less than 600
persons, shall be built and constructed in accordance with.
the following laws, conditions and requirements, to-wit:
A. All such places of amusement in the fire limits

must be and shall only be contained in Glass "A", Class "B"
or Class "C" buildings.
All such places of amusement not contained in C,as
"A" or Class "B" buildings must have their interior entirely
sheet rock or plaster board
and thoroughly lined with sheet metalv or metal lathed and

I plastered. Brick, tile or concrete walls need not be lathed
ar plastered. All such places of amusement having a seating
capacity of more than 400 persons must be surrounded by ma-
j s onry walls.
C. All seats in the auditorium shall not be less
than 32 inches from back to back, measured. in a horizontal
direction, and firmly secured to the floor. No seat in the
auditorium shall have more than 6 seats intervening between
it and an aisle. No seat nor stool shall be placed in any

aisle.
, J. In addition to such exits on the street there
shall be reserved for service in case of emergency, where
the seating capacity is 150 or less, one exit in the rear;
where the seating capacity is greater than 150 and less than
300, there shall be one exit in the rear and an additional
exit in the rear half of the auditorium; where the seating
capacity is greater than 300 and less than 600, there shall
be one exit in the rear and two additional exits, one of
which must be in the rear half of the auditorium and which,
in the case of auditoriums less than 30 feet in width, must
be at the side near the center. Such rear exits, if in the
side walls, must be within ten feet of the rear wall. Each
exit shall be not less than five feet in width.
SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissionerly_
it is necessary to the health, peace and safety of the inhabitant
of Salt Lake City that this ordinance shall take effect immediate:_y.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its
first publication.
