An ordinance amending and re-enacting Sections 622, 525 and 626
of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1903, as amended by an
ordinance passed by the City Council January 15, 1906, and approved
I'by the Mayor January 22, 1906.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Sections 522,- and. 526 of the Revised Ordi-
nances of Salt Lake City of 1903, as/amended by an ordinance passed
by the City Council January 15, 1906, and approved by the Mayor Jan-
uary
22, 1906,be, and the same hereby are amended and re-enacted so
as to read as follows:
522. HOW COfSTITUTED. The police department of Salt Lake
City is hereby reorganized, and shall hereafter consist of the
following officers, men, employees and agents, whose duties and
compensation shall be as hereinafter fixed:
One head of the department who shall be known as Chief of
Police.
Three desk sergeants.
Seven detectives.
Fifty-three policemen.
Two assistant jailers.
One matron.
The thief of Police shall be ex.-officio jailer, and have
charge of the city jail. He shall receive and safely keep all
prisoners properly committed to his custody. He shall file and
preserve every warrant of commitment, and keep a x.cord, in a
book provided for that purpose, of all persons committed to the
city jail, showing the date of arrest, offense charged, term of
commitment and the prisoner's name, age, place of birth and date'
of release.
525.. SUBORDLIATES. The Chief of i'olice shall, by and with;
the advice and consent of the City Council, and a;proval of Ahe
Mayor, appoint three desk sergeants, seven detectives, fifty

three policemen, two assistant jailers, one matron and all other :
men and employees in the polioe department, and in like manner
fill all vacancies. The Mayor or Chief of Police, with the con-
sent of the Council, may, at any time, remove any subordinate
employee, man or agent without charges being preferred and with
out a trial, hearing or opportunity toabe heard,` whenever, in
" his opinion, the good of the service wi .l be subsorved thereby,

er shall forthwith notifyi;n writing the reMoved person of such
removal; it shall be ne,cpssary to a atelany bause therefor,
and from the time of, notif'lo&tion, the ,person so'3+emoved shall
in no case be entitled to any salary or compensation whatever
526. AS2IGiJ$1T TO DUTY. The Chief of Police shall desig-
nate in writing, filed with the City Recorder, and a duplicate
thereof filed with the City Auditor, one policeman to act as
captain of police, seven polioemen to act as city detectives,
I one policeman to act as first duty sergeant, one policeman to
act as second duty sergeant, one policeman to act as third duty
sergeant, one policeman to act as bicycle policeman, four police.;
men to act as mounted policemen, and forty-four policemen to act `
us patrolmen. Whenever any change shall occur in the police
department by death, resignation, removal, transfer, promotion
or reduction, the Chief of Police shall, in like manner fill all ;
vacancies from among the existing force, or from appointments,
as in his judgment he shell deem bet for the good of the service.!
SECTION 2. All ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict
herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of snob conflict.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon approval.
