An ordinance emending and re-enacting Section 585 of the Re- vised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1900, as amended; and. amend i.n and re-enacting Section 588 of said Revised Ordinances, estab-' lishing a standard of wei;hts for the sole of commodities, and • fixing a standard of measures for certain commodities. Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah: SECTION 1. That Section 585 of the Revised Ordinances of • Salt Lake City, Utah, of 1905, as amended, be, and the same s Thereby amended end ro-enacted so as to read as follows: 585. There is hereby established within Salt Lake City,1 a standard of weights for the sale of all commodities, end it shall be unlawful for any person, firm, associction or corpo- ration to sell or offer for sale in this city any commodity which is not in conformity as to weight, with such standard. When any commodity is purchased or sold by the ton, pound, half-pound or quarter-pound, each ton, pound, half- pound or quarter-pound shell contain respectively the follow- . . ing number of pounds and ounces avoirdupois weight, and grains Troy weight: A ton shall consist of 2,000 pounds, avoirdupois weight; : a pound shall consist of 16 ounces avoirdupois weight, or 7,000 grains Troy weight; a half-pound shall consist of 8 ounces avoirdupois weight, or 3,500 grains Troy weight; and a quarter pound shall consist of four ounces avoirdupois weight,' or 1,750 grains Troy weight. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, association or corporation to sell or offer for sale in this city, fruits ' or vegetables in bulk or loose packages, otherwise than by weight. Apples may be sold by the box provided they aro tiered • • -2- and packed in standard boxes of not less than the following dimensions: 11-1/2 inches wide, 11-1/2 inches deep, 18-1/2 • inches long, containing not less than 2446 cubic inches. Strawberries, raspberries, dewberries, blackberries and logan berries shall be packed in what are commonly known as ten ounce cups, containing not less than 23-3/4 cubic inches, or in what are known as one pound cups, containing not less li than 42-1/2 cubic inches; provided, that raspberries may be sold in smaller receptacles prior to and including the date of June 15th in each year. Oranges, lemons, grape fruit and peaches shall be sold by count. All peaches packed in boxes for the market shall ji have the total count of the box plainly marked on the outside of each box. Concord grapes may be sold by the basket, and each basket with its contents must weigh not less than seven pound$. Bunch goods, such as lettuce, carrots, beets, radishes, green onions, asparagus, bananas, do, shall be sold by count. It shall be unlawful to use berry cups a second time as it receptacles for fruit or vegetables, or to use unclean or unsanitary crates, boxes or sacks. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, association or corporation to sell or offer for sale in Salt Lake City, coal by the sack or bog, or hay by the bale without having the net weight of said coal or hay stamped, printed or written on a tag attached to said. sack or beg containing coal, or attached to said bale of hay. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, association or corporation to refuse to weigh any package or receptacle containing any article or property herein referred to, sold or offered for sale, upon demand of the Sealer of i7eirh_ts and Mea$Yxes so to do• I -3- I SECTION 2. That Section 588 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1903, be, and the same is hereby amended and re- ' Ilenacted so as to read as follows: 588/ FENS. The fees collected for services by said officer under this chapter, shall be by him covered into the city treasury monthly, and shall be accounted for in full; fojr each settlement he shall take from the treasurer duplicate receipts, one of which he shall file with the city auditor. Said inspector and sealer shall collect for each examination, ; testing, sealing and certifying es horeinbefore required, the following fees, which shall be collected from the owner or owners of the weights, measures, or other articles tested: For any steelyard or beam, ground, floor platform or other scales by which may be weighed not ex- ceeding 260 pounds 0.25 • Any such instrument by which may be wei;phed over 260 pounds and not exceeding 600 pounds 0.50 Over 600 pounds and less than 1200 pounds 0.75 • Over 1200 pounds and not exceeding 2500 pounds - - 1.00 Over 2500 pounds 2.50 Wagon scales 2.50 For any yard stick, dry or liquid measure 0.10 Provided that two or more yards in length marked on a counter shall be, each 0.05 For any nest or set of measures 0.25 ii And the weiCnts attached to any scale shall, as to the ' foe to be collected by such inspector snd sealer, be considered a part of the scales. It shall not be lawful for said in- spector and sealer to collect or receive the aforesaid ehargeS more than ones in each six months from the same person for the same instrument, unless such instrument is found to be out of order, not conformable to the standard, or in case of change of place of business; but no charge shall be made for testing any measure or vessel for which s fee has once been paid to an inspection officer actin7 unclor and. by authority of this ordinance, and which bears the stamp or brand of such; inspection. SECTION 3. All ordinances or parts of ordinances, 2nd rose u- -4- I tions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby re- , pealed to the extent of such conflict. SECTIOII 4.
