An ordinance amending Sections 830, 831, 832, 833, 835, 836
and 837 of the Revised Ordinances of Suit Lake City of 1913, as
contained in Chapter 32 of said ordinances, relating to the Law
Department of said city; and adding to said chapter a new section
to be known es Section 838x.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake
City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Sections 830, 831, 832, 833, 835, 836 and
837 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1913, as con-
tained in Chapter 32 of said ordinances, relating to the Law
Department, be, and the same are hereby amended so as to reed as
follows:
SECTION 830. That there is hereby created the offices •'
City Attorney and. three Assistant City Attorneys. Each of
said. offices shall be MIA. by appointment by the Board of
Commissioners of Salt Lake City.
SECTION 831. The Law Department of Salt Lake City shall
comprise the offices of City Attorney and three Assistant
City Attorneys. The Law Department shall have charge of all
legal matters pertaining to the rights, obligations, property,
property rights, administration, officers an(O agents; it shal
also have charge in the city's behalf, of all litigation to
which the city is a party. Should any of said officers have
personal knowledge of any violation of a city ordinance, or
receive reliable information of any such violation, he shall'
immediately institute the necessary steps to bring the offend.t
to punishment.
S'iCTION 832. The City Attorney shall attend the meeting:
of the Board. of Commissioners; but such attendance upon any
given meetins may be waived by the Board at its election. He
shall advise and counsel the Board of Commissioners and. the.

members thereof, and'all other officers of the city upon such
questions of law pertaining to the business, -property end all
affairs of the city as may from time to time arise. Ho, or
either of the assistant city attorneys, subject to his direc-
tion, shall prosecute and defend in all courts all actions on
behalf of the city, and. defend all actions against any office
or agent of the city, on account of his official acts; \:e shall
take appeals or sue out writs of error on behalf of the city
or any officer as aforesaid, with the consent and approval of
the Board of Commissioners; and either he or either of the
assistant city attorneys, may make the necessary affidavits
and verifications on behalf of the city in any and all pro-
ceedings. He, or either of the assistant city attorneys, un r
his direction, shall draft all ordinances, and. shall prepare
ell legal documents required in the transaction. of the city's
business. The City Attorney shall be the head of the Law
Department, and shall have charge and direction thereof. In
the absence of, or during the disability of the City Attorne',
all functions, powers and duties of said officer shall be
exercised end performed by the Assistant City Attorney reoei -
ing the highest salary as such officer; end. in case of the
absence or disability of the City Attorney and said Assistant
City Attorney, such functions, powers and duties shall be die-
charged by the Assistant City Attorney receiving the next
highest salary as such officer.
SECTION 833. The Assistant City Attorneys shall aid th
City Attorney in all matters pertaining to the city's legal
business as requires'., and shall conduct such litigation and
attend to such other legal matters in behalf of the city and
its officers as the Board of Commissioners or the City
Attorney may require.
SECTION 835. The City Attorney shall, on or before the
5th day of each and every month, or oftener if required,
settle with the Auditor of Public Accounts, and pay to the
City Treasurer all moneys in the hands of the Law Department,
belonging to the city. He shell report quarterly, or oftener
if required to the Board of Commissioners, the condition of
business in the Law Department.
SECTI^2._836. The compensation of the City Attorney shall
be 0,000.00 per annum; the compensation of;'the Assistant
City Attorneys Shall be t2400.00, 0.800.00 and 4500.00 per
annum respectively. Said salaries shall be payable monthly,
as are the salaries of other city officers.
SECTION 837. Before assuming the duties of their res-
pective offices, each of said officers shall take ?;r:, sub-
scribe the constitutional oath of office, end shall furnish
bonds to the city as follows: The City Attorney in the sum
of cA,000.00; and each of the Assistant City Attorneys in the
sum of $2,000.00.
SECTION 2. There is hereby enacted a new section to be added
to Chapter 32 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1913,
relating to the Law Department, said new section to be known as
Section 838x, and to read as .follows:
SECTION 838x. Upon the recommendation of the Commission r
of Public Affairs and Finance, the Board of Commissioners may
employ such other persons as said Board may deem necessary
to perform duties in the Law Department, and for such length
of time and at such compensation as shall be fixed by said
Board.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first
publication.
