AN CRAINANcz
An ordinance providing for the establishment of one or more
public markets and for their government and control.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, Utah:
Section 1. The Board of Commissioners may establish
one or mare public markets, the location of which within the City
limits shall be determined from time to time by the Board of
Commissioners as conditions and the convenience and necessities of
the public may require.
Until otherwise provided by resolution of the Board
of Commissioners,

markets: The south side of Fourth South Street between First and
Second East Streets; the east 330 feet of the north side of Fourth
South Street betwweeai First and Second East Streets; the south
t 495 feet of the tkside of Second East Street between Third and
Fourth South Streets; also the south side of Third South Street
between Second and Third West Streets and the east side of Third
West Street between Third and Fourth South Streets.
Section 2. Each of said markets shall at all times
during the hours they shall remain open be under the immediate
supervision and control of an officer o ((tth 60 Board of Health who
shall be detailed for that service by thg CFommissioner,nOsilatiodeto
Section B. It shall be the duty of the officer in charge
of the public market to maintain order in and about the market and
require that vendors end buyers therein keep the peace and extend
courtesy to the public and toward one another. He shall have full
authority to place all wagons, oarts or other vehickes and designate
the location and placing of the stands of the vendors and enforce
order among them and collect the charges and fees hereinafter me tione

Section 4. The open hours of the public markets shall be
from six A.M. to ten A. M. on every day of the week except Sundays,
provided that on Saturdays said public markets may be kept open until
eight P.M.
Section 5. Vendors who produce the articles they offer for
sale, butchers, grocers and other dealers who have established places
of business, and licensed peddlers may acquire and use space in the
public markets by the payment of market dues equal to twenty-five (255i)
cents for each market day , in addition to any license otherwise
imposed upon them by the City.
Vendors who produce the articles they offer for sale,
butchers, grocers, peddlers and others required to pay for market priv-
ileges under this ordinance,shall obtain their privileges from the
officer in charge of said market, who shall issue cards to them for not
less than eight (8) days' privilege at one time at a charge of twenty-
five (25I) cents per day, said cards to show on their face that they
are good for eight (8) separate market days, numbered and designated
accordingly, and the officer in charge shall demand of all those who
are required to pay under this ordinance, to show their cards before
entering on the sale of their goods, and the said officer shall cancel
out one (1) day's privilege for each day the holder thereof avails him-
self of the same. Said cards shall not be assignable, nor shall may
person except the one named therein do business by virtue of the same.
Section 6. The officer in charge shall mark off and designate
on the curbing or stalls, or otherwise, as conditions may suggest as
most desirable, space suitable for an individual wagon or market man;
shall number the same and assign such spaces by number to the several
vendors who apply for space in the markets, and in such assignments
shall segregate into groups, so far as practicable, the vendors who
produce the articles which they offer for sale, and the peddlers,
merchants, eta., giving preference of looatton, if any, to the producers.
Section 7. Peddlers shall affix to their wagons or stands
if the produce be removed from wagons, in a conspictous place in p1

view of the buying public, a sign bearing the word "PEDDLER," in plain
black letters not less than three (3) inches high. Merchants, includ-
bng all persons who maintain el sewhere an established place of
business for the sale of articles of food, shall display the word
"MERCHANT" in the same manner as above. Those persons who, themselves,
produce the article they offer for sale and who have complied with
the terms of section 871 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City
of 1913, as amended by ordinance passed shall display the sign
"REGISTERED"PRODUCER" upon their wagons or stands. Prices of articles
may be indicated by means of tags if the vendor so desires.
Section 8. Any person who shall sell or offer or expose for
sale, or have in his possession any article of food that is unwholesome
or unfit for human consumption and any person who shall falsely repre-
sent himsekf to be a producer wittin the meaning of this ordinance or
who shall violate any of the provisions of this ordinance or of the
rules and regulations made by the officer in charge pursuant thereto,
shall be deprived of the benefits of the public market for one month
and upon a second offense, may be permanently expelled therefrom and
shall in addition thereto be liable to the punishment hereinafter
described.
Section 9. All vendors hhal l be required to keep their goods
or produce on wagons, carts or other vehicles or structures not less
than fourteen (14) ``inches above the ground, floor or sidewalk and shall
not be allowed to olatruot the free passage way of buyers or pedestrians
with produce boxes or other articles.
Section 10. The department of streets Shall arrange for keep-
ing the street in the vicinity of the public markets clean and in
sanitary condition. Vendors shall be required to remove all waste
matter br to place it in receptacles provided for the purpose.
Section 11. All classes of parsons, firms or corporations,
including consumers, retailers and wholesalers shall be freeto inky in
said public markets in such quantitibs as the market affords and the /
trade or use demands.

Section 12. No person shall sell at auction any goods,
wares or merchandise or furniture of any kind within the limits of
any public market.

14T►.nier or obstruct such officer iii the discharge of his iluties or to
?•refuse or fail to obey his lawful orders.
Section 15. Any person violating any provision of this
dre shall upon conviction thereof, be punished by a fine in any
sum not exceeding $50.00 or by imprisonment in the city jail for a
period not longer than thirty days. The court may in imposing the
fine, enter as part of the judgment, that in default of the payment of
the fine, the defendant may be imprisoned tin the city jail for a
period not exceeding thirt y days.
Section 16. All ordinances and parts of ordinances in
oonflice with this ordinance are hereby repealed to the extent of such
conflict.
Section 17. This ordinance shall take efi'ect upon its
