An ordinance amending and re-enacting Sections 522, 525 and 526
of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1903, as amended by an
ordinance passed by the City Council May 17, 1909, and approved by
the Mayor May 18, 1909; also amending Section 533 of said Revised
Ordinances, as amended by an ordinance passed by the City Council
July 13, 1908, and approved by the Mayor July 14, 1908, relating to
the Police Depari¢nent.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Sections 522, 525 and 526 of the Revised Ordi-
nances of Salt hake City of 1903, as amended by an ordinance passed
by the City Council May 17, 1909, and approved by the Mayor May 18,
1909, relating to the Police Department, be, and the same are hereby
amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
522. HOW CONSTITUTED. The Police Department of Salt Lake
City is hereby re-organized and shall hereafter consist of the
following officers, men, employees and agents, whose duties and
compensation shall be as hereinafter fixed:
One head of the department, who shall be known as ohief of

police;
One chief of deteotives;
III Three desk sergeants;
Seven detectives;
Sixty-five policemen;
Two assistant jailers;
One matron.
The ohief of police shall be ex-officio jailer and have
charge of the city jail. He shall receive and safely keep all
prisoners properly committed to his custody He shall file and
preserve every warrant of commitment and keep a record, in a
book provided for that purpose, of all persons committed to the
city jail, showing the date of arrest, offense charged, term of
commitment and the prisoner's name, are, place of birth and date

of release.
525. SUBORDINATES. The chief of police shall, by and with!.
the advice and consent of the City Council, and approval of the
Mayor, appoint one chief of detectives, three desk sergeants,
seven detectives, sixty-five policemen, two assistant jailers,
one matron, and all other men and employees in the police depart'*
ment, and in like manner fill all vacancies. The Mayor or Chief,

of Police, with the consent of the Council, may, at any time,
remove any subordinate employee, man or agent without charges ,
being preferred and without a trial, hearing or opportunity to I
be heard, whenever, in his opinion, the good of the service willi
be subaerved thereby, and such removal shall be final and con-

elusive. The City Recorder shall forthwith notify in writing
the removed person of such removal; it shall not be necessary tol
state any cause therefor, and from the time of notification the
person so removed shall in no ease be entitled to any salary or
compensation whatever.
526. ASSIGNMENT TO DUTY. The chief of police shall desig-
nate in writing, filed with the City Recorder, and a duplicate
thereof filed with the City Auditor, one policeman to act as
first lieutenant of police, one policeman to act as second lieu-I
tenant of police, seven policemen to act as city detectives, one'i
policeman to act as first duty sergeant, one policeman to act as!

second duty sergeant, one policeman to act as third duty ser-
geant, four policemen to act as motor cycle policemen, five po-
�I licemenito act as mounted policemen, and fifty-two policemen to
act as patrolmen. Whenever any chenge shall occur in the policeI
department by death, resignation, removal, transfer, promotion
or reduction, the chief of police shall, in like manner, fill all
vacancies from among the existing force, or from appointments,
it as in his judgment he shall deem best for the good of the service.

SECTION 2. That Section 533 of said Revised Ordinances, as
amended by an ordinance passed by the City Council July 5, 1909, and
approved by the Mayor July 7, 1909, relating to the Police Depart-
ment, be, and the same is hereby amended and re-enacted so as to read!
as follows:
533. SALARIES. The officers, employees, men and agents of!
the police department shall receive yearly salaries, payable
monthly, as are the salaries of other city officers, in amounts
as follows;
Chief of police and ex-officio jailer $3,000.00
Chief of detectives 1,800.00
City detectives, each 1,260.00
First and second lieutenants of police, each - - - ' 1,440.00
Duty sergeants, each 1,200.00
Mounted policemen, each 1,200.00
Desk sergeants, each 1,020.00
All other policemen, except motor cycle policemen,
each 1,020.00
Motor cycle policemen, each 1,050.00
Assistant jailers, each 1,020.00

3IOTION 3. All ordinances and resolutions, or pt:rts of ordinan-
ces and resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the
extent of such conflict.
SECTION 4. This ordinance shall take effect upon approval.
