'�( ---- �AN ORDINANCE / /cip, Result . . . . AN ORDINANCE AMENDING Sections 174, 184, 189, 229 and 233, of the Traffic Code of Salt Lake City, Utah. Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah: of Article 9, SECTION 1. That Section 174/of the Traffic Code of Salt Lake City, Utah, relating to qualification of vehicles, registration and equipment restrictions, be, and the same hereby is, amended by adding thereto subsections 3, 4 and 5, to read as follows: Sec. 174. Lights, brakes, and other equipment.* * * (3) Any motorcycle or motor-driven vehicle carrying a passenger on a public highway, other than in a side car or enclosed cab shall be equipped with footrests for such passenger. (4) No person shall operate any motorcycle or motor-driven cycle with handlebars above shoulder height. (5) No person shall operate or ride upon a motorcycle or motor-,riven cycle upon a public highway posted for speeds higher than 35 miles per hour, unless, (a) He is wearing protective headgear which complies with standards established by the State Commissioner of Public Safety; (b) He is wearing an eye-protective device of a type meeting standards established by the State Commissioner of Public Safety, except when the motorcycle or motor-driven cycle is equipped with a windscreen. (c) This section shall not apply to persons riding within a closed cab. SECTION 2. That Sections 184 and 189 of Article 10, of the Traffic Code of Salt Lake City, Utah, relating to regulations for driving on the right side, overtaking and passing and other rules of the road, be, and the same hereby are, amended by adding to Sec. 184 a subsection 3, and adding to Sec. 189, subsections 5 and 6, to read as follows: +;k -2- Sec. 184. Overtaking and passing vehicles proceeding in same direction. * * * (3) No person shall operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle between lanes of traffic, or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles, but this section shall not apply to police officers in the performance of their official duties. Sec. 189, Laned roadway, weaving. * * * (5) Motorcycles or motor-driven cycles shall not be operated more than two abreast in a single lane. (6) All motorcycles and motor-driven cycles are entitled to full use of a lane and no motor vehicle shall be driven in such a manner as to deprive any motorcycle or motor-driven cycle of the full use of a lane. This subsection shall not apply to motorcycles or motor-driven cycles operated two abreast in a single lane. SECTION 3. That Sections 229 and 233 of Article 15, of the Traffic Code of Salt Lake City, Utah, relating to miscellaneous driving rules, be, and the same hereby are, amended by adding to Sec. 229 a sub- and (3) section (1), and by adding to Sec. 233, subsections (1) and (2),/to read as follows: Sec. 229. Interference with vehicle. * * * (1) A person shall ride upon a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle only while sitting astride the seat, facing forward, with one leg on either side of the motorcycle or motor-driven cycle. Sec. 233. Control by driver. (1) No driver shall engage in any activity that interferes with the safe control over the driving mechanism of the vehicle. (2) No person shall operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle while carrying any package, bundle, or other article which prevents him from keeping both hands on the handlebars. (3) No operator shall carry any person, nor shall any person ride, in a position that will interfere with the operation or control of the motorcycle or motor-driven cycle or the view of the operator. SECTION 4. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, it is necessary to the peace, health and welfare of the inhabitants of Salt Lake City that this ordinance become effective immediately. -3- SECTION 5. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first publication.
