MINUTES OF A MELTING OF PROPERTY OWNERS
residing in the Sugar House District, together with
Mr. Arthur F. Barnes, of the City Commission and
Fire Chief William Bywater, called for the purpose
of discussing the fire restrictions of the Sugar House
District, held at the Granite Lumber Company's Office
January 7, 1921, M. 0. Ashton, Chairman, and 7. B.
Richards, Jr., Secretary.
The following business men and tax-payers
were in attendance: City Commissioner Arthur F.
Barnes, Fire Chief William Bywater, M. 0. Ashton,
W. B. Richards, Jr., Ilephi J. Hansen, A. C. Smoot,
J. A. Rockwood, Andrew P. Davidson, Edward Laird,
W. B. Richards, Sr., Mrs. Chas. Hart, Mrs. Timby,
M. D. Settle, Horace E. Eldredge, A. Matton, John
Burt, James Dean and George Dixon.
Mr. J. A. Rockwood was asked by the
Chairman to state his interpretation of the present
fire ordinance, which he did, explaining that the or-
dinance covers the district from Hollywood Avenue, on
the North to the Railroad track on the Seuth, and from
12th East on the East and to 9th East on the West, and
that the restrictions particularly prohibited the
building or altering of any wood or frame buildings
within the district, and that it included sleeping
porches and auto garages.
Mr. Ashton, Chairman, explained that a
Committee consisting of Mr. N. J. Hansen, W. B.
Richards, Sr., Lon Fisher, Edward Laird, J. A. Rock-
wood and A. C. Smoot, had at a previous meeting been
appointed to formulate a request or petition that the
existing ordinance be rescinded and a new fire district
be created with such modifications ae would permit the
repairing of already existing buildings within the dis-
trict with the same materials as at present constructed,
and that they were to decide upon the limits that should
be asked for to be embraced within the fire zone.

A part of the ;=etition that this Committee had
formulated and given to the Commissioners was read, and
the limits were explained and designated on a map fur-
nished by Commissioner Barnes. Chief Bywater made
some remarks explaining fully the fire restrictions, and
stating why this section had been included in the fire
district. Also explaining that before the present exist-
ing ordinance was introduced, letters were sent out giv-
ing a chance for any complaints or objections, but none
had been entered.
A discussion was entered into by several of the
gentlemen present. Mr. Andrew Davidson presented a peti-
tion asking that that portion of 21st South Street lying
West of McClelland Avenue continuing to 9th East, 125
feet back from the property line be included in the fire
district, which was not included in the petition of the
Committee appointed by the property owners. Mr. Davidson
explained that the Signers of the petition were thoroughly
familiar with the fire ordinance, and that it was their
desire to come under the restrictions of the same.
A motion was proposed by Mr. J. A. Rockwood and
seconded by Mr. Smoot, that the recommendation of the
Committee contained in the petition that the restrictions
and privileges of the petition, and also the bounds
suggested by the Committee be accepted, with the exception
that the limits be extended as per the request in the
petition of Mr. Andrew Davidson and others, carrying the
West limits of the district to 9th East on 21st South
Street, 125 feet back from the property line. T!is motion
was passed unanimously.
A vote of thanks was given Mr. Barnes and Mr.
Bywater for their kindly interest and consideration of
the Sugar House District. A copy of the minutes was
asked for by Mr. Bywater, that they may be placed on
file in the office of the City Commissioners as a final
settlement of the matter. The meeting was adjourned.
