HomeMy WebLinkAbout62 of 1980 - Deleting section 30-1-10 and amending section 25-11A-8 relating to political activities by civil ser / ORDINANCE AN ORDINANCE DELETING Section 30-1-10 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to political activities by civil service personnel in the police department and AMENDING Section 25-11A-8 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to political activity by City employees. Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah: SECTION 1. That Section 30-1-10 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to political activities by civil service personnel in the police department, be, and the same hereby is REPEALED. SECTION 2. That Section 25-11A-8 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to political activity by City employees, be, and the same hereby is amended as follows: Sec. 25-11A-8. Prohibition against political activity. No officer or employee of the City (other than those elected to their positions of employment) shall be an officer of a political party or hold political office during his employment; provided that this section shall not apply to voting district officers and delegates. No city employee or official shall solicit orally, or by letter, or be in any other manner concerned in obtaining any assessments, contributions, or services for any political party from any city employee. Nothing herein contained shall be construed to restrict the right of the employee to hold membership in--and support--a political party, to vote as he chooses, to express privately his opinions on all political subjects and candidates, to maintain political neutrality, and to attend political meetings after working hours. Any non-elected officer or employee who wishes to seek election to a political office shall request and obtain a leave of absence no later than the day following the primary election for such office. SECTION 3. In the opinion of the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, it is necessary to the health, peace and welfare of the inhabitants of Salt Lake City that this ordinance become effective immediately. SECTION 4.
