(Uniforms for Peace Officers)
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 30-1-23 OF THE REVISED
ORDINANCES OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, 1965, RELATING TO UNIFORMS
FOR PEACE OFFICERS.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Section 30-1-23 of the Revised Ordinances
of Salt Lake City, Utah, be, and the same hereby is amended by
adding a new subsection (3) thereto, relating to uniforms for
off-duty peace officers, to read as follows:
Sec. 30-1-23. (a) Under direction and supervision of the
chief of police of Salt Lake City, only regularly and full time
employed officers and employees of the Salt Lake City police
department shall have authority to wear any substantial part of
the total regulation uniform, which would have the effect of
causing public confusion as to lawful police authority.
(b) The provisions of this section shall not apply to
designations of uniforms by other lawfully constituted public
bodies.
(c) The specifications of the regulation uniform of Salt
Lake City police department shall be designated by the chief of
police.
(d) Certain items of required wear may be furnished by the
department.
(e) The chief of police may authorize, by rule and regula-
tion, sworn peace officers employed by the police department in a
uniformed capacity, to wear such uniforms, including badges,
while performing services as armed or unarmed private security
officers, under the terms and restrictions of Section 58-45-23,
Utah Code Annotated, 1953, and other applicable provisions of
law.
SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first
publication.
Passed by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 18th day of August , 1981.
