AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER VIII, Revised Ordinances
of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1920, by adding in and to Article VIII
of said Chapter VIII a new Section to be known as section 382X1,
relating to construction of l* story'briek dwellings.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, Utah:
SECTION I. That Chapter VIII, Revised Ordinances of Salt
Lake City, Utah, 1920, be and the same is hereby amended by adding
in and to Article VIII of said Chapter VIII a new Section to be
known as Section 382X1, relating to construction of l storybr3ckdaieQ3-
ings, to read as follows:
SECTION 382X1. l-- STORY BRICK DWELLINGS. (a) It story
brick dwellings, within, the size and general construction here-
inafter set forth, shall be built with enclosing walls not
less than eight (8) inches thick laid in a full bed of mortar
either in Flemish bond with through headers or with full header
courses at least every sixth course in height. Walls that are
not built or bonded in this manner or walls that are laid with
raked out bed joints or walls that are not tied and anchored
or bolted to the wood construction of the building as herein-
after set forth shall not be less than twelve (12) inches thick
in the first dtory. Face brick that are not bonded as above
called for shall not be considered as part of the thickness of
the wall and a backing wall eight (8) inches thick will be re-

quired in such cases.
(b) The term 1* story brick dwelling within the
meaning of this ordinance shall apply to buildings used as
private residences, the second story of which is not a full
story. No section of walls between corners to be more than
forty-five (45) feet long without adequate brick buttresses
or chimneys or cross walls of brick. The total height of
brick walls measured from underside of the 1st floor joists
to the underside of wall plates shall not exceed 15 feet ex-
cept that gable walls may be eight (8) inches thick providin:
the width of gables does not exceed seventeen (17) feet and
the gable walls are anchored as hereinafter specified and do
not exceed a total height of thirty (30) feet above the unde -

side of the let floor joists.
(c) The top of all gable walls shall either be
trimmed to the slope of the rafters and shall have continuou-
plates two (2) inches thick bolted to the walls not more tha
four feet aptirt, or a rafter shall be placed on each side of
the gable walls and securely nailed to the roof sheathing so
as to form a good anchorage.
(d) All second floor joists and ceiling joists are
to be securely anchored to the walls not more than four (4)
1 feet apart all around. ,"there the finished first floor line i,
more than five (5) feet above the finished grade line, the
first floor joists shall also be anchored as above specified.
(e) The top of all walls is to have continuous we
plates two (2) 'inches thick which are to be bolted to walls
not more than four (4) feet apart with 1/2 inch bolts not
less than sixteen (16) inches long with washers at both ends.
(f) All wood partitions are to be bolted to brick
walls with two bolts in height.
(g) All first story walls of the li story portion
of residences are to have a continuous tie all around the
building consisting of two bands of hoop iron. These ties

to be imbedded in the section of wall above the first floor
openings and below the second floor joists.
SECTION 2: In the opinion of the Board of Commission-

1ers, it is necessary to the health, peace and safety of the in-
habi; ants of Salt Lake City that this ordinance take effect im-
mediately,
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its
first publication. •
Passed by the board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
Utah, this SO day of ' A.D. 1925.
