Result AN ORDINANCE
An ordinance amending Sections 776 and 792 of the Revised Ordin-
ances of Salt Lake City, 1913, as amended, relating to salaries and
organization of Salt Lake City Fire Department.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
Utah:
SECTION 1. That Section 776 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt
Lake City of 1913, as amended, be and the same is hereby amended so as
to read as follows:
Section 776. The Fire Department of Salt Lake City shall
hereafter consist of the following officers, men, employees, and
agents, whose duties and compensations shall be as provided by
ordinance:
One chief of department,
One assistant chief of department,
Seven captains,
Six lieutenants
One superintendent of fire and police alarm,
One master mechanic,
One inspector,
One secretary,
Sixty-eighty firemen of three grades, towit:
First grade, second grade, third grade,
And such additional employees and at such compensations
as the Board of Commissioners shall from time to time authorize.
SECTION 2. That Section 792 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt
Lake City, 1913, as amended, be, and the same is hereby, amended so
as to read as follows:
Section 792. Compensation. Grading, etc. The officers,
employees, men and agents of the fire department shall receive
yearly salaries, payable monthly{as are,.th.e salaries of other

Assistant Chief, 1,740
Captains, 1,500
Lieutenants, 1,260
Superintendent of fire and police alarm, 1,500
Master ilechanio, 1,500
Inspector, 1,260
Seoretary, 1,200
Firemen of first grade, 1,200
Firemen of second grade, 1,080
firemen of third grade, 960
Firemen without previous experience shall be appointed to
the third grade only, and may be prolloted upon recommendation d
the chief of the fire department after servioe of one year, if,
in the opinion of the chief of the fire department, their servioe
and ability entitles them to promotion. The chief of the fire
department may appoint into the second grade applicants who, in
addition to regular requirements, have served at least one year
in the third grade in this service or two years in fire service
outside the fire department of Salt Lake City, or a term of en-
listment in the United States army. The chief of the fire depart-
ment may appoint into the first grade applicants who, in addition
to regular requirements and having had two or more years' servioe
in fire service, are especially qualified.
All applicants must successfully pass such examinatiorS as
may be required by the prescribed rules and regulations.
No member of the fire department shall be allowed pay for
any period during which he may have been absent from duty, unless
such absence resulted from sickness or disability contracted or
received in the discharge of his duty and incident to the servioe.
No member of the fire department shall receive any fee or any com-
pensation whatever, directly or indireotly,from a city, county or

state for any service rendered or act done by euoh member of the
fire department, other than the salary provided for by ordinance
except withess fees in superior courts, nor shall any member of the
fire department reoeive any money or compensation whatsoever, direct-
ly or indirectly, from any person, for any service, rendered, to be
rendered or act done other than the salary provided by ordinance;
provided, however, that a gift or reward may be accepted by a
member of the fire department only upon the written recommendation
of the chief of the fire department and approved by the Commissioner
of Public Safety.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first
publication.
