to the fire Department.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, Utah.:
SECTIONd I. Chat Sections 1165, 1166, 1168, liri8 and 1181
of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 19W, be and.
the sane are hereby amended to read as follows:
SECTION 1165. ONG,Ihiia.fION
fire Department of Salt Labe City shall consist of the
following officers, whose salaries shall be as fired by
the 3oard of Commissioners rdthin the limits upeci-"'ied
as follows:
The Chief of Department, not to exceed - - io600.00
.asist nt Chief, not to exceed 2160.00
Secretary, not to exceed - - - - - - - - - 1800.00
Captains, not to exceed 1920.00
Lieutenants, not to exceed 1680.00
Superintendent of Fire and Police Alarm,
not to exceed 160.00
Firemen of 1st Grade, not less than - - - - 1620.00
nor more than 2400.00
Firemen of Lind Grade, not less than - - - - 1500.00
nor more than - - - - 1620.00
Firemen of 5rd Grade, not less than - - - - 1080.00
nor more than 1500.00
Inspectors, _ueputy _ire i;arshals, Master ::echanic,
and Firemen Mechanics shall be graded as Captains, Lieuten-
ants or firemen of the first, second aid tliird grade.
SECTION 1166. ASSIGNMENTS. The Chief of the
Fire Department may assign any subordinate officer in the
department to any duty which in his judgment the good of
the service requires and may change such assignment from
time to time whenever in his judgment the good of the ser-
vice requires.
whenever assignments are intended for a period-of
thirty days or more, the Chief of the Fife Department shall
report to the Board of Commissioners the names of such fire-
men as are assigned by him to the following services, to-wit:
Master Llechanie and firemen mechanics. Copies of such assign-
ment ,shall be filed with the City Auditor and Secretary of
the Civil Service Commission.
Firemen while acting in the follo:ring capacities
Vanier assignment _nor thirty days or more
shall be entitled to compensation in addition to regular com-
pensation as firemen, to be determined by the Board of Com-
missioners, and not to exceed the following:
Master Liecitanic ;565.00 per, month.
Firemen 1echanics 10.00 per month.
SECTION 1168. wLJaL'ICdTI0lS. Every person who
shall be appointed a member of the _'ire Department mast at
the time of his appointment be a qualified elector of Salt
hake City, an able-bodied man and able to converse under-
standingly in the English language, and shall ;also possess
such other qualifications and pass ouch examinations as
may be required by the rules and regulations of the Civil
Service Commission.
No person of the classified civil service of the
-Fire Department shall use his official position as authority
to influence or coerce the political action of any person,
nor be a mefOber or delegate or alternate to any political •

convention, nor serve as a member of any committee of any
political party, or tale :.nj active -!;art in the management
of any political campaign, nor solicit, collect or receive
any assessment, subscription, contribution or dues. intended
or used for any political purpose whatsoever, nor shall he
be obliged to contribute to any political fund or render
any political service whatsoever.
SECTION 1178. API'0INTI.IIITS. The Chief of the
Fire Department shall, by and with the consent of the Soard
of Commissioners and subject to the rules and regulations
of the Civil Service Commission, appoint from the classified
Civil Service list tarnished by the Civil Service Sor:uaLssion
all subordinate officers and employes in said -_'ire Dcpart-
ment. All subordinate off i eel'2 and employes in the :':ice
.Department shall be subject to removal from office or am-
aloyment by the Chief of the -'ire )er,artr.rent for misconduct,
incompetency, or failure to •perform their duties, or failure
to observe and obey city ordinances, rules and regulations
of the Civil Service Commission or the rules of the Chief
of the department; subject, however, to appeal by the ag-
grieved party to the Jivi.l Service JomiissiOn. :.7ny _ierson
discharged may within five days of the order discharging
him appeal therefrom to the Civil Service Commission, rirach

charged person shall be entitled to appear in person and
have counsel and a public he;:;r•ing, he findings and deci-

Commission shall determine after hearing whether such

discharged person shall be entitled to full compensation
from date of discharge to date of reinstatement, or another
he shall be on suspension without ay burl n the said
:Period; and also what, if any, demerit he shall receive.
SECTION 1181. IlUEJ. k'plicartE; without pre-
vious experience in fire service shall, after the proba-
tionary period, be appointed to the third ,7;rade only, and
may be promoted by the Chief of the lire Dopartent into
the second grade after service of one year in the Del:art-
ment, according to the rules of -iJ.he Civil Service Commission.
Applicants who, in addition to regular require-
ments, have served, at least one year in the Salt Lake City
lire Department, 02 at least two years in fire service else-
where, shall be appointed into the secondzrade after aro-
bationary period. ?iremen,after servin continuously for
at least one year in the second aTade,may be promoted into
the first grade according to rules and regulations of the
Civil Service Commission.
SECTION 1. In the opinion 02 the Board of Commissioners
it is necessary to the health, cane and safety of the inhabi-
txts 02 Salt Lake City that this ordinance become effective
immediately.
SECTION a. This ordinance shall take effect upon its
publication.
