Be it ordained, by the Board of Commissiomers of Salt
Lake City, Utah:

same are hereby amended rind re-enacted so as to read as follows;
Section The fire department of Salt "ake City shall
hereafter consist of the following officers, men, employees and
agents, whose duties and compensations shall be as hereinafter fixed
One chief of department.
One assistant chief of department.
Six captains.
Six lieutenants.
One superintendent of fire alarms.
One inspector
One secretary.
Sixty firemen of three grades, to-wit: First grade, second
grade, third grade and such other additional employees as the Board
of Commissioners shall from time to time authorize.

Firemen without previous experience shall de appointed. to the
third grade only, and eay be promoted upon reco:eeaadndation of the
chief of the fire de;;rartcsent after service of one year, if, in the
opinion of tie chief of tee fire department, ti eir service and
ability entitles them to promotion. eie chief of tee fire depart-
ment ca+y appoint into the second grade epelicauts who, in addition
to reeuler require,eents, have served at least one year in tee third
grade in this service or two years in fire :service outside the fire
deportment of col . cake City, or a term of enlistment in the 'United
