An ordinance amending and re-enacting Sections 522, 525 and 526
of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1903, as amended by an
ordinance passed by the City Council July 13, 1908, and approved by
the Mayor July 14, 1908.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Sections 622, 526 and 526 of the Revised Ordi-
nanoes of Salt Lake City of 1903, as amended by an ordinance passed
by the City Council July 13, 1908, and approved by the Mayor July 14,
1908, be, and the same are hereby amended and re-enacted so a:; to rea
as follows:
522. HOW CONSTITUTED. The Police Department of Salt Lake
City is hereby reorganized, and shall hereafter consist of the
following officers, men, employees and agents, whose duties and
compensation shall be as hereinafter fixed:
One head of the department, who shell be known as Chief of
Police;
One Chief of Detectives;
Three desk sergeants;
Seven detectives;
Sixty-three policemen;
Two assistant jailers:
One matron.
The Chief of Police shall be ex-officio jailer, and have
charge of the city jail. He shall receive and safely keep all
prisoners properly committed to his custody. He shall file and
preserve every warrant of commitment, and keep a record, in a
itbook provided for that purpose, of all persons committed to the
city jail, showing the date of arrest, offense charged, term of
commitment, and the prisoner's name, age, place of birth and date
of release.
525. SUBORDINATES. The Chief of Police shall, by and with
the advice and consent of the City Council, and approval of the
Mayor, appoint one chief of detectives, three desk sergeants,
three
seven detectives, sixty-txw policemen, two assistant jailers, on
matron, and all other men nod employees in the Poliso Departr'¢,nti,

and in like manner fill all vacancies. The Mayor or Chief of
Police, with the consent of the Council, may, at any time, re-
move any subordinate employee, man or agent, without charges be-
ing preferred and without a trial, hearing or opportunity to be
heard, whenever, in his opinion, the good of the service will be
subserved thereby, and suoh removal shall be final and conclusi .
The City Recorder shall forthwith notify in writing the removed
person of such removal; it shall not be necessary to state any
cause therefor, and from the time of notification the person so
removed shall in no case be entitled to any salary or compensa-
tion whatever.
526. ASSIGNMENT TO DUTY. The Chief of Police shall desig-
nate in writing, filed with the City Recorder, end a duplicate
thereof filed with the City Auditor, one policeman to act as
First Lieutenant of Police, one policeman to act as Second Lieu-

r, ment by death, resignation, removal, transfer promdtion or re-
duction, the Chief of Police'shall, in like manner fill all va-
cancies from among the existing force, or from appointments, as
in his judgment he shall deem best for the good of the service.

SECTION 2. All ordinances and resolutions or parts of ordinance
land resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent
of such conflict.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon approval.
