73 of 1908 - Ordinance 73 of 1908 – Amending & re-enacting Sections 522, 525 & 526, re: organization of Police AN ORDINANCE . An ordinance amending and re-enacting Sections 522, 525 and 526 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1903, as amended! by an ordinance passed by the City Council June 3, 1907, and approved by the Mayor June 4, 1907; and amending and re-enacting Section 5331 of said Revised Ordinances, as amended by an ordinance passed by 1 the City Council June 4, 1906, and approved by the Mayor June 6, 1906. Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah: SECTION 1. That Sections 522, 525 and 526 of the Revised Ordi.I nances of Salt Lake City of 19'03, as amended by an ordinance passed by the City Council June 3, 907, and approved by the Mayor June 4, 1907, be, and the same her are amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows: 522. HOW CONSTITUTE➢. The Police Department of Salt Lakei City is hereby re-organized, and shall hereafter consist of the! following officers, men, employees and agents, whose duties and compensation shall be as hereinafter fixed: One head of the department, who shall be known as Chief of Police; One Chief of Detectives; Three desk sergeants; Seven detectives; Fifty-three policemen; Two assistant jailers; One matron. The Chief of Police shall be ex-officio jriler, sod have charge of the city jail. He shall receive and safely keep all prisoners properly committed to his custody. He shall file and preserve every warrant of commitment, and keep a record, in a book provided for that purpose, of all persons committed to the' city jail, showing the date of arrest, offense charged, ten _ �3 L a I -2- 1 s commitment and the prisoner's name, age, place of birth and date. i of release. 525. SUBORDINATES. The Chief of Police shall, by and with the advice and consent of the City Council, and approval of thej Mayor, appoint one chief of detectives, three desk sergeants, seven detectives, fifty-three policemen two assistant jailers, UU I one matron and all other men and employees in the police depart;'- ment, and in like manner fill all vacancies. The Mayor or Chief of Police, with the consent of the Council, may, at any time, remove any subordinate employee, man or agent without charges being preferred and without a trial, hearing or opportunity to be heard, whenever, in his opinion, the good of the service will be subserved thereby, and such removal shall be final and conclusive. The City Recorder shall forthwith notify in writing the removed person of such removal; it shall not be necessary to state any cause therefor, and from the time of notification the person so removed shall in no case be entitled to any salary or compensation whatever. 526. ASSIGN2.2'.'NT TO DUTY. The Chief of Police shall design nate in writing, filed with the City Recorder, and a duplicate thereof filed with the City Auditor, one policeman to act as First Lieutenant of Police, one policeman to act as Second city ' Lieutenant of Police, seven policemen to act asndetectives, one, policeman to act as first duty sergeant, one policeman to act as second duty sergeant, one policeman to act as third. duty sergeant, one policeman to act as bicycle policeman, four police- men to act as mounted policemen, and forty-three policemen to act as patrolmen.
