AN ORDINANCE AMENDING Chapter 1 of Title 21 of the Revised
Ordinances of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to the Bureau of
Mechanical Inspection.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
Utah:
SECTION 1. That Chapter 1 of Title 21 of the Revised Ordinances
of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1965, relating to the Bureau of Mechanical
Inspection, be, and the same hereby is amended to read as follows:
CHAPTER I
GENERAL PROVISIONS
Sections:
21-1-1. Divisions, department.
21-1-2. Duties.
21-1-3. Director, inspectors, and assistants.
21-1-4. Reports.
21-1-5. Books, paper, equipment.
21-1-6. Fee for inspection.
Sec. 21-1-1. Divisions, departments. There is hereby estab-
lished in the Department of Streets and Public Improvements a
Department of Building and Housing Services to be under the direct
supervision of the Director of the Department of Building and
Housing Services which department shall be divided into the
following departments:
Division of Building Inspection
Division of Plumbing Inspection
Division of Electrical Inspection
Division of Mechanical Power & Heating Inspection
Division of Housing Inspection & Services
Salt Lake City Code Enforcement Agency
Sec. 21-1-2. Duties. The duties of the Department of Building
and Housing Services shall be to enforce the zoning laws of Salt
Lake City and to inspect, or cause to be inspected, all buildings
and structures erected or proposed to be erected in Salt Lake
City and to carry out, enforce, and perform all duties, provisions,
and mandates designated, made, and set forth in the ordinances
of Salt Lake City concerning zoning, building, building inspection,
plumbing, plumbing inspection, electrical inspection, power and
heating inspection, and existing structures, and to examine and
approve all plans and specifications before permits shall be issued
and to execute all permits, certificates, and notices required to
be issued; and to enforce all ordinances relating to the installa-
tion or maintenance of plumbing and drains; to enforce the ordi-
nances relating to installation and repair of electric light and
power wiring, fixtures, appliances and apparatus in or running to
any building within the city and to inspect and supervise the
same; and shall perform all of the duties and have all of the powers
required of and conferred on the building inspector by the Uniform
Building Code 1970 Edition and the ordinances of Salt Lake City.

Sec. 21-1-3. Director, inspectors and assistants. The Board
of Commissioners of Salt Lake City may employ a director,
inspectors, home rehabilitation counselors, and such other clerks
and assistants as the exigencies of the work of the said Depart-
ment of Building and Housing Services may from time to time
require, at such compensation and for such periods of time the
Board of Commissioners may deem proper.
Sec. 21-1-4. Reports. On the first day of each and every
month a consolidated report containing an itemized account of
the business and transactions of the Department of Building and
Housing Services, the expenses thereof and the income therefrom,
for the preceding month shall be made and filed with the Board
of Commissioners of Salt Lake City. The director may select a
qualified employee from the department to make such monthly
reports. Annual reports shall be made and filed with the Board
of Commissioners on or before the first day of January of each
year, in the same manner as monthly reports.
Sec. 21-1-5. Books, papers, equipment. The City shall pro-
vide such instruments, books, papers and equipment as shall be
necessary for the proper performance of the duties of the
members of the department. The director shall have charge and
control of the books, instruments, papers and equipment used
and employed in his department and shall deliver the same to his
successor in office.
Sec. 21-1-6. Fee for inspection. When the Department of
Housing Inspection and Services inspects existing housing pursuant
to the request of the owner or occupant, the fee for such inspec-
tion shall be $15.00 and shall be paid by the individual request-
ing the inspection.
SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, it is necessary to the peace, health and welfare of the
inhabitants of said City that this ordinance become effective immediately.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect upon its first publi-
cation.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah, this
18th day of July, 1973.
