AN ORDINANCE
Result
An ordinanoe amending Section 950 of the Revised Ordinances
of Salt Lake City of 1913, relating to the Police Department.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake
City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Section 950 of the Revised Ordinances of
Salt Lake City of 1913, relating to the Police Department, be, and
the same is hereby amended so as to read as follows:
SECTION 950. The polio. department of Salt Lake City is
hereby reorganised and shall hereafter consist of the following
officers, men, employees and agents, whose duties and compen-
sation shall be as hereinafter fixed:
One chief of police, who shall be at the head of the
police department;
One inspector, with the rank of senior captain;
One captain;
One junior captain;
One matron;
One janitor;
One secretary to the chief of police;
One hundred three patrolmen of three grades, to-wit:
first grade, second grade and third grade.
Patrolmen without previous experience shall be appointed
to the third grade only, and may be promoted upon recommenda-
tion of the chief of police after service of one year, if, in
the opinion of the chief of p lice, their service and ability

I move to amend the ordinance now being considered
by the Board of Commissioners, amending Section 950
nen of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1913,
relating to the Police Department, by adding at the
end thereof a paragraph as follows:
The Board of Commissioners may by resolution,
employ such other employees or laborers as it may deem necessary
for the proper conduct of said department.

entitles them to promotion. The chief of police may appoint
into the second grade applicants who, in addition to regular
requirements, have served at least one year in the third grade
in this service or two years in police or detective service
outside the police department of Salt L ake City, or a term
of enlistment in the United States army. The chief of police
may appoint into the first grade applicants who, in addition
to regular requirements, and having had two or more years
service in police and detective work, are especially qualified
for police service.
All applicants must successfully pass such examinations
as may be required by the presoribed rules and regulations.
SECTION 2. This ordinance shal take effeot upo its first
publication.
