An ordinance amending Sections 72x1, 72x4, 80 and 81 of
Chapter 5 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1913,
as amended by an ordinance passed by the Board of Commissioners
of Salt Lake City, July 18, 1918.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake
City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Sections 72x1, 72x4, 80 and 81 of Chapter
5 of the Revised Ordinances of Salt Lake City of 1913, as
amended by an ordinance passed by the Board of Commissioners
July 18, 1918, be, and the same are hereby amended so as to
read as follows:
SECTION 72x1. DEFINITIONS. The term "garbage" as
used in this chapter shall be held to include and mean all
animal and vegetable refuse from kitchens of residences,
hotels, oafes, restaurants and planes where food is
prepared for human consumption, inoluding all animal and
vegetable refuse from such kitchens; provided, however,
that such term does not include waste from slaughter houses.
The term "market waste" as used in this chapter,
shall include oondemned or decayed or unsound vegetables,
meat, fish and fruit, and all waste and offal thereof from
markets, stores and factories, and all vegetable waste and
refuse from such markets, stores and factories, provided,

however, that trade waste not specifically described in
this definition shall not be included in the term "market
waste", nor in the term "garbage"; provided further, that
the term "market waste" does not include waste from slaughter
houses.
The term "stove ashes" as used in this chapter, shall
include the residue of material burned in stoves and in
furnaces in private residences, but not the residue from
furnaces in apartment houses, hotels, business houses,
heating or manufacturing plants. An apartment house is
defined to be a building comprising four or more suites
designed for separate housekeeping tenements with heat
furnished in common.
SECTION 72x4. It shall be unlawful for any person
other than a person holding a permit from the Board of
Health for such purpose, to collect or convey through th®
market waste
streets garbage, paper in which garbage is encased, swill,,,
or dead animals. It shall be unlawful for any person other
than a person holding a permit from the Board of Health for
such purpose, to interfere in any manner with any receptacle
containing garbage, paper in which garbage is encased, swill,
market waste, or the contents thereof, or any receptacle
containing any other form of city refuse or the contents
thereof, or to remove any such receptacle from the location
where the same was placed by the owner thereof, or to xmasmm
remove any of the contents of such receptacle.
SECTION 80. It shall be unlawful for any person to
haul or carry garbage, paper in which garbage is encased,
swill, waste paper, market waste, night soil or dead animals
upon the streets of Salt Lake City without first obtaining
a permit from the Board of Health.
SECTION 81. It shall be unlawful for any person

engaged, in the business of removing manure, night soil or
other offensive material, to fail to secure e. permit from
the Board of Health for that purpose, or to fail to have the
word "eoavenger" and the number of his permit in large white
letters on black ground plainly printed or attached to both
sides of his wagon-bed; provided, however, that the contractor
employed by the City to collect and remove garbage and other
waste material shall have printed or painted upon each side
of the vehicles used in the collection thereof the words
"Permit No. (giving permit number), Board of
Health", the words "Board of Health" being in large letters.
SECTION 2. In the opinion of the Board of Commissioners it
is necessary to the peace, health and safety of the city that
this ordinance become effective immediately.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect October 1, 1918.
