AN ORDINANCE AMENDING Section 30-1-17 of the Revised Ordinances of
Salt Lake City, Utah, 1955, relating to stolen property and duties of chief
of police.
Be it ordained by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
Utah:
SECTION 1. That Section 30-1-17 of the Revised ordinances of-Salt
Lake City, Utah,' 1955, relating to stolen property and duties of chief of
police, be, and the same hereby is, amended to read as follows":
"Sec. 30-1-17. Stolen property. Duties of Chief of police.
It shall be the duty of the chief of police to keep all lost or
stolen property that comes into the possession of the police
department or any of its members, and he shall make all reason-
able effort to discover the owners thereof and restore said pro-
perty to such owners. Whenever the owners of such lost or stolen
property is discovered and determined, if the same is unclaimed
after the expiration of fifteen (15) days from the date of mailing
a written notice, describing said property, its present location
and any other facts to properly identify it, to the last known
address of the owner thereof, such property may be sold as herein-
after provided. In any event, the chief of police shall not be
obliged to keep said property longer than a period of six (6) months;
and if the owner of such property shall not be found within the
period of six months, the chief of police shall advertise for at
least ten (10) days in a newspaper of general circulation in Salt
Lake City, the sale of such property, and may on the date specified
in such advertisement, offer to the public at private or public
sale all such property which has been in his possession for six
months or more prior to such date, and may sell the same for the
highest and best price obtainable.
"The chief of police shall make full report to the city
treasurer of the articles sold and the amount of money received
by him for same at any such sale, and the moneys received at such
sale shall be covered into the city treasury.
