BE IT RESOLVED by the Board;/of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, Utah, that the following statement of gratitude and
appreciation of this community be forwarded to Captain Ernest
G. Small, Commanding Officer of the Cruiser Salt Lake City, and
its crew for their heroic action in the Savo Island battle on
October llth and 12th, 1942, news of which has just been released:
To Captain E. G. Small, Commander,
And the entire crew of the
Cruiser Salt Lake City:
A ship is only as valiant as its Commander
and crew; their valor, courage and skill make her
a living personal entity. Through your intrepid
and skillful action during the Savo Island battle
the Cruiser Salt Lake City has become heroic, a
symbol of American fighting spirit. And Salt Lake
City is greatly honored to have its name emblazoned
in the glory that you have so meritoriously won.
To you and your valiant crew Salt Lake City ex-
tends its deepest gratitude and appreciation for
