WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City recognizes
the educational and cultural value of the George T. Hansen Planetarium,
Space Science Library and Museum to the residents of Salt Lake City,
Salt Lake County and all the citizens of Utah; and
WHEREAS, the Planetarium has experienced exceptionally heavy
usage by residents of the whole of Salt Lake County; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners appreciates the expressions
of support for the Planetarium from individuals, community leaders,
neighborhood groups, students, their parents, and school administrators
living in Salt Lake County, and
WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners have decided that new arrange-
ments for subsidizing the Planetarium must be made before June 30,
1978, when Salt Lake City Public Library mill levy support will end;
and
WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners has determined that, because
of the extensive usage of the Planetarium by citizens of Salt Lake
County, that it should be a County institution;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of
Salt Lake City that it does hereby endorse the effort of concerned
citizens to establish a stable and continuing program of public fin-
ancial support for the Hansen Planetarium; therefore, said Commissioners
support and encourage the Legislature to adopt the legislation pro-
posed to allow Salt Lake County to establish a mill levy to support
the Planetarium and to appoint a citizens board of directors to
govern the operation thereof.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that if the Utah State Legislature and
the Governor approve appropriate legislation enabling Salt Lake
County to assess a small mill levy to assist in subsidizing the

the Planetarium, the Board of Commissioners will Lease the Planetarium
to the County.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 27th day of December , 1977
