Catmull I move that the Resolution be adopt Harrison Mr. Chairman RESOLUTION Result . WHEREAS, the United States Post Office Department has announced its intention to locate a new branch post office facility at 2240 Sunnyside Avenue, Salt Lake City, Utah; and WHEREAS, the new proposed location would tend to increase the volume of traffic through the intersection of Sunnyside Avenue, and 21st East Street, which intersection is already a dangerous intersection; and WHEREAS, the new proposed location is adjacent to a residential section and no businesses are located in the immediate vicinity thereof; and WHEREAS, the construction of the new post office facility would tend to have an adverse effect upon the property value in the residential area to the detriment of the City and the property owners owning property near said site; and WHEREAS, the new proposed location does not appear to be centrally located for the convenience of mail users in the general vicinity of said proposed site location but said site appears to have been chosen primarily for its free land (on Fort Douglas property) ; and WHEREAS, it appears there are other and more suitable locations available for the proposed facility which would better serve the public convenience which have not received the consideration of the post office department as more fully appears hereinafter. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF SALT LAKE CITY, as follows: 1. That the United States Post Office Department reconsider its decision to locate its new proposed facility at 2240 Sunnyside Avenue, Salt Lake City, Utah. 2. That the Post Office Department consider the location of its proposed facility in the following alternative locations: (a) A location on Federal Government land fronting on Guardsman Way, a new north-south thoroughfare at approximately 1580 East, which connects with 5th south on the north and Sunnyside Avenue on the south. This alternative site would be near the University of Utah and the Veterans Administration Hospital. The traffic hazard would be minimized at this proposed location and is considered to be the best of the alternative proposals. (b) A location on Federal Government land near the built-up area of the remaining Fort Douglas Military Reservation. This would be near the University of Utah and the Veterans Administration Hospital. 1 -2- (c) A location on private land in the new East- land Hills Shopping Center at 21st South and Foothill Blvd. This would better serve the users of the shopping center but would be re- moved from the University and the Hospital. 3. That the interests of the United States Post Office Department, the City of Salt Lake and the residents thereof would be better served if the location of the postal facility as now determined be abandoned and an alternative site be chosen in accordance with the fore- going. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Recorder be and he is hereby authorized and directed to forward copies of this Resolution to the United States Postmaster, the Salt Lake City Postmaster, the Honorable Senator Wallace F. Bennett; the Honorable Frank E. Moss; Congressman Lawrence J. Burton; and Congressman Sherman P. Lloyd.
