RESOLUTION
Result . . . .
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City, the capital of the great State of Utah,
is unique in many ways, with a heritage that is possessed by few, if
any, cities in the United States, being a cultural and religious center
known all over the world; and
WHEREAS, in the immediate future, the number of guests and tourists
coming to our City through conventions and for scenic and sporting
recreation will increase, and the downtown area of our City should be
up to date and esthetically acceptable to receive these visitors; and
WHEREAS, the capital city's downtown area should be such that the
people of the State of Utah can take a just pride as the headquarters
of their government; and
WHEREAS, the City Government needs to take the lead in improving
our situation, and especially to reverse the trends of physical deterio-
ration that are evident; and
WHEREAS, certain work relating to replacement of many sidewalks
must be done at an early date for safety and for improved appearance,
and the logical time to accomplish such a project is a part of an
overall improvement plan as presented by Barton-Aschman Associates,
Inc., Urban Designers, under contract with the City; and
WHEREAS, the Salt Lake City Commission recognizes the need for
taking an affirmative stand to encourage further steps toward construc-
tion;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Commission does commend
the preliminary plans and cost estimates by the Urban Designers to
property owners, merchants, other tenants, and citizens generally, and
upon indication of favorable action by a substantial majority of the
property owners, merchants, and citizens, the Salt Lake City Commission
will enter into the 2nd phase of the contract with the Urban Designers,
who are associated with Carpenter and Stringham, Architects, of Salt
Lake City, and Alton H. Sorensen, Engineer, Salt Lake City, to complete
the working drawings and specifications; the City will secure con-
struction bids and take the steps necessary to set up a Special Improve-
ment District to pay for the work--such steps being necessary prior to
actual construction.
If the majority of the property owners on other streets not included
in the original project desire to be included in the Special Improvement
District, the District will then be expanded to include said streets.
ALSO, the Mayor and City Commissioners of Salt Lake City do commend
all efforts expended and endorse the proposal that Main Street from
-z-
Fourth South to South Temple, and Broadway from Main Street to State
Street, be revitalized and made a place of utility, beauty, and pride
for the more complete enjoyment of the citizenry, and does hereby
encourage positive and affirmative action on this proposal by the
merchants and the owners of the area involved, and the citizens at
large of Salt Lake City.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this \V7 day of March, 1970.
