WHEREAS, Gus P. Backman succumbed at the age of 80 on May 14, 1972;
and
WHEREAS, he devoted his life to the service of his community, state
and nation, having served as Executive Secretary of the Salt Lake City
Chamber of Commerce for 34 years and being widely acclaimed for his
extraordinary ability to get things done; and
WHEREAS, during his lifetime he held many civic and business
positions of trust and confidence and was a major force in the growth
and development of Salt Lake City and the State of Utah; and
WHEREAS, his outstanding contributions to the welfare and develop-
ment of this City and State earned for Mr. Backman the love and respect
of his fellow citizens who affectionately referred to him as "Mr. Utah;"
and
WHEREAS, in his passing Salt Lake City has lost one of its most
respected and valued citizens.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, that it does hereby express on its own behalf,
and on behalf of all the residents of Salt Lake City, its sincere
appreciation for the most productive life and service of Gus P. Backman
and its deep sympathy to Mr. Backman's survivors for the personal loss
which they have sustained in his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be delivered
to the family of Gus P. Backman as an expression of our sympathy and
deep feeling of loss.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah, this
16th day of May, 1972.
