RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT FOR THE CENTRAL CITY REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City has responded to the Department of Housing
and Urban Development's Project Selection System in an effort to establish
eligibility and need for a redevelopment project in the Central City Area, and
WHEREAS, the result of the Project Selection System submission
was that the need was greatest in the Central City area when compared with
all other proposed project areas in the six states of HUD Region VIII, and
WHEREAS, it is the City's intent as set forth in the Community
Improvement Program to stabilize through rehabilitation and selective clearance
the character of the Central City residential neighborhood, and
WHEREAS, the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City would be
assigned the responsibility and authority of conducting such a project, and
WHEREAS, the property acquired and cleared would be made available
to the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City for construction of low-income
public housing for families on a dispersed basis, and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that clearance of vacant and grossly
substandard structures will provide land sufficient for approximately
fifty low-income public housing units, and
WHEREAS, public improvements and rehabilitation of residential
units will also be involved in the initial year of activity within the
designated nine block area, and
WHEREAS, it is anticipated that additional funds may be necessary
for activities subsequent to July 1, 1974, and
WHEREAS, should such be the case and should the City be eligible for
and receive Community Development Revenue Sharing or similar assistance from
the Department of Housing and Urban Development or other Federal agencies, a
portion of such funds will be utilized to further to completion redevelopment
activities in the Central City area,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF
SALT LAKE CITY CORPORATION, that we do hereby reaffirm our intent to carry
out and support the proposed redevelopment project in the designated nine
block area of Central City;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we expect this project to be very
beneficial to the community, not only in rehabilitating and stabilizing a
deteriorating residential neighborhood, but also in furthering the City's
efforts to provide low-income housing on a dispersed basis.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 14th day of March , 1973.
