II'1 DEC 131938 �r ; 11 li ateprogi,pnAt, .4 , !,1 amr RECORDaw :i 11 I I , OI h Date Piled 1', Id 11 li Address l'i 11 11 Gogg n Keyser Matheson - - - - Murdock - - - - Mr.Chairman - - - TION =c Result WHEREAS, the mining industry is responsible for approximately one-half of all the industrial activities of the State of Utah; AND WHEREAS, silver mining is one of the largest factors in this particular industry; AND WHEREAS, through Congressional action a silver purchase policy has been fixed under which the President of United States has the authority to establish from time to time the purchase price of newly mined silver; AND WHEREAS, silver is mined in the State of Utah in connection with many other ores and the establishment of the price of silver above the World Market makes it possible for many mines to continue in operation which would otherwise be closed; AND WHEREAS, there are many thousands of citizens in the State of Utah seeking employment at the present time and many thousands additional are being cared for through the operation of the Works Progress Administration; AND WHEREAS, the purchase of silver under the present policy by the Federal Government is not in any way imposing additional tax burdens on the people of the United States nor is it imposing any obligation on the part of people of other sections of the nation caring for the people who are dependent upon the silver mining industry inasmuch as silver certificates are issued against the silver purchased; -2- Resolution AND WHEREAS, we are of the opinion that in the event the President of the United States should see fit to restore the former purchase price of silver to-wit: seventy-seven and fifty-seven hundredths cents ($.7757) per ounce, many thousands of additional people would immediately find employment in the Western States and thereby relieve the Federal Government, as well as the local governments, of the tremendous responsibility they are now carrying in providing relief in various forms. NOW THEREFORE, Be it Resolved by the City Commission of Salt Lake City, Utah, that we petition His Excellency, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the President of the United States, that he continue his silver purchasing policy and that he establish the price of newly mined silver in the United States for the coming year at seventy-seven and fifty-seven hundredths cents ($.7757) per ounce.
