C z-i4t Mr. Chairman . / Result RESOLUTION - WHEREAS, Salt Lake City Municipal Airport is the major airport between Denver, Colorado and the Pacific Coast, and is an extremely vital hub in providing air service to the whole intermountain region, and its maintenance is of vital importance to the entire State of Utah; and, WHEREAS, air transportation and air service are constantly under- going great improvement and expansion which necessitates the enlargement and extension of airport facilities to properly accommodate air traffic; and, WHEREAS, over the years the runways at the Municipal Airport have had to be extended periodically in order to provide proper take-off and landing facilities and no one can presently determine to what length the runways must be extended to properly serve the air industry in the future; and, WHEREAS, the only direction that the runways at the Municipal Air- port can be extended is to the north, and ample room for such extension in that direction is an absolute necessity to properly maintain said airport and permit it to realize its future potential in the air industry and in the economy of Salt Lake City and the State of Utah; and, WHEREAS, the planned 2200 North Belt Route interchange proposed by the State Highway Department would erect a permanent barrier to the extension of the airport facilities beyond 2200 Yorth and thus end for- ever expansion to the north and so prevent the possibility of extending airport facilities to meet probable future needs: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF SALT LAKE CITY that it does hereby petition and request the State Depart- ment of Highways and the State Road Commission to abandon plans for an interchange at 2200 North and select a new location for an interchange and highway which would permit ultimate extension of the airport runways to an effective length of at least 16,000 feet, or longer, if possible. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said Board hereby requests that the State Department of Highways and the State Road Commission give serious consideration to the use of the suggested West Valley Expressway Exten- sion as a means of affording access to the Municipal Airport from the North and thus eliminate the problem of blocking off the extension of the airport runways. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Recorder transmit a copy of this resolution to the State Department of Highways and the State Road Commission.
