RESOLUTION
Result . . . .
WHEREAS, the Department of Defense has ordered Fort Douglas, Utah,
closed effective July 1, 1967, with the exception of selected reserve
facilities and Deseret Test Center facilities, and
WHEREAS, at the present time, Fort Douglas houses the following 23
federal and state agencies: U. S. Forest Service, U. S. Geological Survey,
Sacramento District Engineers, Defense Subsistence Supply Agency, Armed
Forces Entrance and Examining Station, 115th Counter Intelligence Corps,
6th Criminal Investigation Division, Utah Department of Health, 54 Family
Housing (Army) , 13 Family Housing (Navy) , Utah Army National Guard, U.S.
Navy Recruiting District, U. S. Marine Recruiting District, Headquarters
Salt Lake City Junio ROTC, U. S. Medical Supply Agency, Post Cemetery (Closed) ,
U. S. Army Reserve, Deseret Test Center, U. S. Navy & Coast Guard Reserve,
U. S. Army Garrison, U. S. Army Tent Corps Sector.
WHEREAS, the U. S. Army garrison alone represents a 2.1 million dollar
annual expenditure on payroll and local procurement, and,
WHEREAS, if agencies to be moved from Fort Douglas are to be located
in the downtown Salt Lake City area and subsequent housing is found to
provide space for the 67 sets of quarters to be evacuated on the post, this
will result in a substantial increase in cost to the taxpayers of Salt Lake
City, Utah, and the nation, and,
WHEREAS, Department of Defense survey teams have surveyed Fort Douglas
is
and have indicated that it/one of a few military installations in the country
with near maxiumum utilization, and,
WHEREAS, it is deemed advisable and in the public interest to more fully
consider whether the local and national economy and military interest will

will be best served by preserving Fort Douglas.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City, Utah, that said board does hereby request the federal authorities
to delay closing Fort Douglas for one year to allow further time for study
to determine whether the closing of Fort Douglas is truly in the best
economic and military interest of the people of the State of Utah and of
the United States.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be forwarded by
the City Recorder to the President of the United States, Secretary of
Defense, Robert S. McNamara, to each member of the Utah Congressional
Delegation, to the Governor of the State of Utah and to the President of
the Utah State Senate and the Speaker of the Utah House of Representatives.
