RESOLUTION
Result . . . .
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City Corporation is on record favoring the
increase of local sales taxes from one-half percent to one percent
and has submitted proposed legislation to the present state legis-
lature for that purpose; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City Corporation is presently imposing a
property tax levy of 28.6 mills for municipal purposes and the Board
of Commissioners of said City favors a reduction of property taxes;
and
WHEREAS, the enactment of such legislation would provide Salt
Lake City with additional revenue more than sufficient to permit
the abolition of certain sewer service charges heretofore imposed
upon its residents and the reduction of present utility franchise
taxes and property tax levies equivalent to a total tax reduction
of approximately 6.5 mills as certified by the Salt Lake City
Auditor; and
WHEREAS, it is the intention of the Board of Commissioners of
Salt Lake City to abolish such service charge and reduce said
franchise taxes and property taxes at such time as said local sales
tax is increased to one percent by the present state legislature in
session:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, that, upon the effective date of legislation
pending before the state legislature presently in session which would
increase the existing local sales tax authority to one percent, Salt
Lake City will immediately undertake to amend its existing ordinances
in the following manner:
1. To abolish the present sewer service charges imposed upon
property owners in Salt Lake City.
2. To reduce the utility franchise tax from four percent to
two percent.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF SALT LAKE
CITY that, in the event of the foregoing and in the absence of any
unforeseen circumstances which would require this board to act other-
wise in the sound management of the City's fiscal affairs, the property
tax levy for 1969 will be reduced by one mill from that which was
levied in 1968.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 29th _ay of January, 1969.
