Y ! RESOLUTION
Result
WHEREAS, Louis Marcus, former Mayor of
Salt Lake City, Utah, departed this life July 27th, 1936.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board
of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,,Utah, that,)ecause of
the outstanding character of former Mayor Louis Marcus'
public service, both as an official and as a citizen, working
for the betterment of the State and of the City, an apprecia-
tion of his life and service should be incorporated in the
public records of this City.
Mr. Marcus ably served the City of Salt Lake
as its Mayor and Commissioner of Public Affairs and Finance
from January 4th, 1932 to January 6th, 1936.
As Mayor-Commissioner of Public Affairs and
Finance, Mr. Marcus was faced with pressing financial difficul-
ties complicated by the depression and widespread unemployment
demanding relief and proved himself equal to the task and
saved the credit of Salt Lake City when other cities were
saved only through Federal Aid and later succeeded in placing
the City's bonded debt upon a more safe and sound financial
basis and was instrumental in altering municipal accounting
methods so that the City books presented a true picture of
the municipal financial standing.
Mr. Marcus was born in Brooklyn, New York
and received his education in Dover, Delaware, later
attending the Buckneil College, after which he engaged in the
electrical business in Philadelphia until 1907 when he came
to Salt Lake City and entered the motion picture industry,
which business he sold out to Paramount in 1929. He was
-2-
the first director-general of Covered Wagon Days in 1931, the
success of which celebration brought his ability to the public
attention and this popularity gained was instrumental in electing
him Mayor in the fall of 1931.
He will long be remembered by the people of this Community
as a man of sterling character, always a man of his word, strong
in his sense of duty and justice. He was respected and trusted by
all. A sincere friend who will never be forgotten by anyone
who enjoyed close association with him. He inspired loyalty and
affection in those who served him. His passing is a loss to all.
We extend to the widow and to the son, our heartfelt
sympathy.
We share with them in the grief of parting.
BE IT ieuliTHER RESOLVED that this meeting be adjourned and
that this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Board of
Commissioners and an engrossed copy forwarded to the family.
Adopted by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
Utah, this 28th day of July, A.D. 1936.
