WHEREAS, Randy Short is a citizen of Salt Lake City,
Utah, fifteen years of age; and
WHEREAS, on April 25, 1980, Randy noticed commotion and
smoke at the Cloverwood Apartments on 800 North, Salt Lake
City, Utah; and
WHEREAS, Randy and others were informed that a room
was on fire within the apartment house and that an infant
child was trapped therein; and
WHEREAS, Randy left the other persons present and
singly and with great personal risk to himself, entered
the thick smoke of the burning apartment to rescue the
helpless infant; and
WHEREAS, the smoke and heat within the apartment
rendered seeing and breathing nearly impossible for Randy;
and
WHEREAS, Randy nevertheless crawled to within a few
feet of the flames to snatch the crying infant from its crib
and certain death; and
WHEREAS, with great difficulty Randy found his way to
the door of the apartment and, with the infant, stumbled
outside to safety; and
WHEREAS, said infant suffered only minor burns and
effects of smoke inhalation, whereas had Randy acted
moments later, the child would have died from heat and
smoke inhalation; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Short, through this act of courage and
unselfish concern, became a true hero to his city and to
its citizens; and
WHEREAS, the public officials of Randy's community
wish Randy's courage to be long remembered and memorialized
in the official records of this great city;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Mayor and City Council of Salt Lake
City, on their own behalf and on behalf of all residents of
Salt Lake City, express to Mr. Randy Short their sincere
appreciation and gratitude for his courageous act of love
for the young child whose life he saved and for the distinc-
tion he brings upon Salt Lake City. Said officials direct
the City Recorder to file this Resolution within the official
records of Salt Lake City to stand as a reminder of this
act of courage. The Mayor and Council further wish Randy
well in all his pursuits and hope he will derive great satis-
faction in the future, knowing the role he has played in the
life of this young infant and in the distinction of our
great city.
Passed by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 2911 day of April , 1980.
