WHEREAS, one of the major factors in perpetuating and
enhancing the value of our mountain water sheds is the maintenance
of vegetative cover; and
WHEREAS, for many years the practice of cutting trees for
Christmas use has resulted in a serious loss in number and quality
of trees on- private, State and Federal lands, thus tending to de-
stroy or materially injure our water sheds and it has further been
made to appear that many of such trees are cut without the consent
or knowledge of the landowner and without regulation; and
WHEREAS, public and private civic-minded individuals and
are takingan active interest in theproblem and have urged
groups g
upon Salt Lake City some action to aid in the preservation of trees.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners
of Salt Lake City that the citizens of Salt Lake City.be and they are
z
hereby requested to aid said city and all civic groups in their at-
tempt to preserve the trees located in our water sheds. This can
best be done by the private individual and citizen determining from
1 all tree senders before a purchase is made that the tree purchased
was hatvested in accordance with Federal or State regulation or
carries a Federal or State tree tag and by refusing to purchase any
tree which is not cut pursuant to Federal State or city regulation.
The public is further urged to cooperate with the Utah State Exten-
sion Service, the School of Forestry, United States Forest Service,
Utah State Agricultural College and the Chamber of Commerce in all
respects performing such service designed to preserve Utah water
sheds and the trees located therei .
