Keyser Murdoch Lee Mr. Chairman - RESOLUTION Result WHEREAS, GEORGE HENRY DERN, Secretary of War of the United States of America departed this life on Thursday, August 27th, 1936, and WHEREAS, Salt Lake City laments the passing of a distinguished citizen, a valued member of the community, a beloved neighbor, one who brought honor to the State which had conferred honors on him. In the death of George Henry Dern who served an appreciative constituency with credit as Chief Executive of the commonwealth and as an influential member of the Presidential Cabinet, the nation, state and city have lost a loyal champion of their interests, while every law-abiding promoter of public welfare has been deprived of the personal aid and encouragement of a willing and efficient helper. As a fellow-citizen, as a mining man of vast experience, as an official in positions of great responsibility and high honor, Secretary Dern was the same genial, approach- able, neighborly gentleman, energetic but dignified, resolute but tolerant, ambitious but reserved, positive but willing to listen and learn, he filled every post of service and renown in a manner to win opponents and enhearten associates, and WHEREAS, in the inscrutable plan of an Omnipotent Power, our friend and fellow citizen, George Henry Dern has been taken from the arena of his earthly triumphs at the zenith of a brilliant career and WHEREAS, in his untimely death the City of Salt Lake has suffered a serious loss and civic movements -2- of the municipality have been deprived of a potent factor and liberal patron. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that We, the members of the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah, on behalf of the City, its entire administration and the residents there- of, hereby express a profound sense of bereavement and extend to the sorrowing family, sincere sympathy, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting and that a copy be sent to the widow of the deceased.
