RESOLUTION
Result . . . .
WHEREAS, prolonged negotiations are still in progress
between the International Association of Machinists and
Eastern Air Lines, National Air Lines, Northwest Orient
Airlines, Trans World Airlines and United Air Lines for a
contract; and,
WHEREAS, the dispute between the International Asso-
ciation of Machinists and the five airlines involved has
grounded 60% of the domestic airlift in the United States;
and,
WHEREAS, on July 27, the Transport Workers Union will
be free to strike American Air Lines which would shut down
80% of the nation's air service and a month later this union
will be free to strike Pan American Airways; and,
WHEREAS, diversion of the International passengers normally
carried by Northwest Orient Airlines and Trans World Airlines
to foreign flag airlines increases the deficit of the United
States international gold payment by $1,000,000.00 daily; and,
WHEREAS, the daily loss in revenue to the Salt Lake City
Municipal Airport in renting, parking and other sources is esti-
mated at $2,000.00 daily during the current strike; and,
WHEREAS, continuance of the strike is crippling business
travel, hotel and resort business, movement of perishable products
and is retarding military supply and military travel; and,
WHEREAS, continuance of the strike is affecting the entire
economy and commerce of this community; and,
WHEREAS, its early termination is imperative.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
OF SALT LAKE CITY that said Board in behalf of itself and of the
citizens of said city, does hereby memorialize the President and
the Congress of the United States to exert every possible effort
to restore full airline service immediately and to insure a
fair and equitable settlement of the airline strike.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
Utah, this 19th day of July, 1966.
